Them:  You're listening to the in store audio network

Me:  Not by choice.

Every time, true story.  Some customers laugh, some just keep walking, but they know...

The music is curated to get people to spend more time in the store. It works mostly on a subconscious level I would presume.

 No it isn't.

That USED to be true when grocery and dept stores played soothing instrumental music during slower times, to (supposedly) encourage people to slow down, relax and enjoy their shopping in an unhurried fashion.

As for our Kroger service (In-store Audio Network), NOT TRUE.   Their mix of music has no real "intellectual" rhyme or reason................most of the timing of the songs in their mixes are based on the fact they simply don't have a very extensive music catalog..........thus their fees are lower than other services. (Kroger isn't just cheap when it comes to paying employees).  Which means there are VERY frequent repeats, even within a 4 hour time span.

Also......... poorly written melodies (some songs repeating one 4-note lyric/phrase 8 or 10 times in a row, showing song-writing so uninventive and bad similar examples were rarely heard 40 years ago) and,  Besides many of the songs feature singers that can barely carry a tune, and their singing effort is fed through the Autotune software (which just makes them sound 'not quite human', with a strange tinny metallic sound to their voice) .

The ISAN service plays lots of songs that do NOT encourage people to stay in the store.

For example:

"YOU'RE NO GOOD!!! You're no good!!!!  You're No Good!!!! "  by Linda Ronstadt

Some of the lyrics in "I will Survive" :

If I'd known for just one second you'd be back to bother me--

Go on now, go, walk out the door!!

Just turn around now!!!

'Cause you're not welcome anymore!!"
