Depends on your contract.  Ask your District Union Representative for the correct answer.

Under most contracts you can be mandatorily required to stay only an hour over past your scheduled shift if you are told an hour before the end of your original shift.

Two hours over if it is a store emergency.

Per your example, they can make you stay until 1.  But, they have to tell you by 11.

If you do not have a union contract, you are sol.

I would rather work 8 hours instead of four.  I don't know how people can survive working 4 hour shifts.

you are not by any means obligated to comply to sudden schedule changes but if you want to progress in the company you need to help them out so they can help you. by showing a "ready for whatever is thrown at you" attitude you make an awesome impression on them. you will end up being stuck in 17 hour weeks until you show initiative and willingness to pick up the slack of other people. by being reliable and open you become a prime employee.

Wooooowwwww, you JUST fell out, didn't you? biggrin .... Wish I were there for your reaction after you've seen your 100th call-out/no call/no-show slacker ass kisser getting away with blue murder in that place!

No, you're reading from a very old script

Yes but you can also say no.  You are only legally required to work what you are scheduled for on paper.  It is up to you after that to say yes or no.  Not sure what union you are in but UFCW Local 21 states if you work past your "scheduled" shift you get like $0.35 more per hour.

They can ask you to work longer, but they can't make you. I wouldn't be complaining about a full 8 hour shift. It's not worth going in for 4 hous.

I'm not the one that is complaining. It is the new hires. I would rather work 8 than 4. Lately I've been working up to 10 hours by choice. They just like to complain. Our union contract you have to work over 8 hrs then the rest is time and a half. One of the store employees told me yesterday they can't, but do it too much they'll move you to a job like bagging and make your life a living hell. (His words exactly) Lol

Yes, if anybody wants more hours, this is exactly how you do it. If they ask you to stay longer to work in your department or help out in another one, you say yes.

There is too little hours for too many people. If they get some hours, they will give them to those that showed willingness to work and be available.

And yes, this maybe old school, like another poster said. For those that don't recognize this style, this is called good work ethics. Too bad it's diminishing. Not gonna blame only workers, also blaming the company.

I'm the Frozen Lead and yes, It's required for me to stay sometimes.  And you ask why?  Because my second guy doesn't like to come in.  He had the opportunity to work over four hours, but didn't.  Didn't want to complete atleast half of the truck acting like a baby.  They give me more hours because I'll stay and get the work done.  Hate staying over 3 or 4 hours, but have to sometimes.  If I don't the truck won't get done.

I've been stuck with jag offs like this. They're the first to call off, come in late and want out early and the last to pitch in, stay over or help extra in any way.

They also tend to be smokers and/or alcoholics -- not all, but a LOT.
