I come back from one week vacation to find out our store is opening one hour earlier now at 5AM. I thought Kroger was trying to get away from 24 hour or close to it operation. The folks to work the fuel center at our store are furious-they have to now be there to open up at 4:45AM. My FES told me that "Kroger really doesn't care" about us. I said "until one of us or a customer gets assaulted" (we are in a soon-to-be dodgy area of town.) This is in the Local 1996 area in Atlanta GA. What are your store hours and have they recently changed?
All of the stores in my area used to be 24 hour, then cut to 5am to 12am. We get plenty of people in that early. It's a grocery store, after all, everyone's gotta eat. There are people out there that try to get some shopping in before they have to go to work. I assumed the change from 24 hours was only because of overnight theft anyway, so it makes sense that they're still trying to maximize the income window.
Does your store have (or is getting) a Starbucks? I was under the impression that was the reason for the early opening stores.
I was the one with the first reply (seriously; I tried creating an account a long time ago but never got the confirmation that allowed me to log in): all of the stores in my area have had a Starbucks since before the ten years I've been with the company. Stores still open at 5 despite them not opening 'til 6.
I'm pretty sure every store has sushi and cheese bars, as well.
I am pretty sure it has to do with the opening cashier is now responsible for stock the Front end candy in to mornings now, from 5am-6am. We just got an email about a week ago in Drug/gm about it. We are supposed to roll the FE candy to the front end at night and they FE cashier is to stock it. And before any cashier complains that they don't have time to stock it or "That's not my job, that's drug/gm's job." Just remember who usually is your relief help everyday.

Why would the fuel center have to open up at the same time as the main store? Our store opens at 5 AM, but the fuel center doesn't open until 6 AM.

Our Fuel Center was told they had to open at the same time-the people who work there are livid!

It's is a contraction for it is. Its (no apostrophe) is the possessive form of it.
Two of the three Kroger stores I've worked at have Starbucks but all the Kroger stores in my area open at 6:00AM.
When I get there shortly before 5:00AM for ClickList, I sometimes have to turn customers away that want to come in when I do. I sure hope my store doesn't start opening at 5AM because it's nice to get a start on the day's ClickList orders an hour before customers can come in.
