Customer claims to be a genius but cant press the payment option button at self chheck. He instead chews out the cashier about how hes super smart and is arguing about how his payment isnt processing. Sounding like a broken record I tell him what to do and hes pretty much an ass hole through the while order. He claims to be a genius but refuses to press one simple button.
When he came to checkout we had two cashiers open and ready to assist and he chooses self check. He chews out my peers about how there are no cashiers and self check is his only option. He points to the two employees at the time clock (non cashiers) and insults half the staff about how there are two people doing nothing and there are no cashiers. Gee thanks jerk. Definitely wont be nice to you next time.

Maybe get some advice from Mr. Frontenac. I have seen these kind of customers before. Just laugh at them. They think every employee is a cashier or even front end person.
This goes to the heart of my philosophy of self checkout. Customers are to be treated like little children. They will make a mess, they will scream and cry, and throw their food back in your face. It is in their nature. Your job is to clean up their mess.
Customer's bottom line was that he wanted his order to be finished and get out. If he didn't realize he had to press the Card button, then just press it for him. Don't explain or argue about it with them. It's pointless.
That when you say your "Sorry, the machine must be malfunctioning" and hit the button and walk away.... :) The person will either open their eyes to being stupid or have the anger you described......either way the button was hit. Stupid only knows Stupid, just like Smart-Asses only Know Smart-Asses.....

Exactly. If they don't realize they had to push the button, simply from just seeing you push it, then they will never get it.
Also, keep that in mind, when you see customers walking away from the Uscan with unpaid orders. There's some customers who think just swiping their card means they've already paid.
These people will never get it. They always think the machine is broken even though it tells them "Select your method of payment" they have it in their head it should just know what payment someone is using. They dont get it even when you show them. Some of these people just seem to not want to learn what to do. Like others said its pointless to explain. I usually just hit the button and walk away.

After this interaction with him/her I'm not seeing them the same again. They can be part of mensa and I'll treat them like a child if this is what they're going to treat me like. I 'm nothing but nice to them each time they come through and they treat me like crap. This individual obviously treats grocery workers like crap I'm not the only employee here they've treated poorly. They need to be careful because I will take legal action against them if it gets out of hand. I near sued my employer at my last location because a customer went crazy on me for a price in the system being wrong. Police will be called if they take it a step too far. They treated me like **** through the whole transaction. This is my third interaction with him at this location and I'm stepping up the rules on him.

I just go up to the machine, hit the card button, and walk away. No explanation and certainly no apologies lol. The assumed feeling of stupidity is satisfaction enough.

Spoken like a piss poor associate. Jesus no wonder Kroger pays so low they should go even lower with these disgusting employees and this attitude. PATHETiC!!!
The real problem is Kroger's POS terminal software is counter-intuitive. WM knows you used your card and processes the payment.
Kroger needs to catch up with their stupid software. It is not the customer's issue when other retailers make it simple, while our system is a pain. Our POS terminals at self-checkout do not process cc payments until you first press "Pay now", and then you still have to select your payment method. Some are reporting updated software that lets you skip the payment method selection if you hit pay now before inserting the cc.
You can put in your cc in advance, and it acts like it has processed it, by telling you to remove your card. You can do this any time. It saves the info for processing until you complete the proper steps. Hence some would easily presume they paid and leave without processing the payment. Honest mistake. If they are waiting for a receipt, they will figure out there is a problem and ask for help.
It processes the payment only after you press "Pay now" and then "Card". I think that (on one of our brand new terminals we just got) it might have skipped the having to press "Card" as others have reported updates doing this. But I have been experimenting since then, but so far I cannot duplicate it.
For employees and regular customers. it is something you just get used to. That does not make it the inexperienced customer's fault that they miss the extra hoops to jump through.
