I am in the Local 1996 Atlanta GA area and it is common in our store to see people buying the $40 seafood sampler and various high-end cuts of meat (that I would never be able to afford or buy even if I could.)
I would believe it would be again SNAP regulations to restrict the purchase of a food item, excluding the food items they restrict. In reality, a sale is a sale......
The only things that have restrictions are the hot food from the chicken shop (can be worked around by putting some rotisserie chickens in a cold area for EBT users) and maybe a restaurant if you have an in store one. Nothing else is limited. I don't see why the store would restrict what an EBT user can buy - it wouldn't benefit them in any way, and in fact it would cost them sales, and that doesn't make sense.
EBT doesn't cover hot food from the deli since it counts as prepared food.
Customers at my store almost never buy fancy seafood or high-end steak with EBT. I only see that kind of thing a couple times per year.
At my store, EBT is near exclusively spent on sugary drinks (especially Gatorade), brand name tv dinners, and brand name junk food.
We have a few convenience store owners who use EBT to buy products for their stores. Your tax dollars at work.
I think EBT should be more like WIC. They'd get a sack of rice, a sack of beans, dry milk instead of fresh milk because **** 'em, and some kind of fresh produce option to shut up anyone whining about nutrition.

My last store had an issue with customers purchasing fancy fiddles with ebt cards. Then ask us to immorally ring it up as something else. Legally we can't do that. If they audit us it's our job on the line. None of us will do it. We had one guy live off of sushi and steak and he continued to remain in poverty to continue to live like it. Thanks ebt users that's where my tax money is going. After working at my last store I lost faith in where my tax money is going towards this program.

I would believe it would be again SNAP regulations to restrict the purchase of a food item, excluding the food items they restrict. In reality, a sale is a sale......
We have several convenience store owners using EBT to buy merchandise. It's always Coca-Cola products on 4/12 or 5/10 type deals. And my store is one of the higher EBT grossing ones, and we also sell a lot of junk food, soft drinks, and Sunbeam bread. Always sell good bread when EBT drops, Kroger bread at the end of the month.
About the only people BUYING steaks and stuff with EBT are dopers selling it to other people, or people who bought EBT cards from the dopers. Most of the EBT crowd will buy other stuff and then steal the steaks.
I am the original poster-there is some talk here in Georgia about restricting the kinds of items EBT cardholders can buy such as sods, and so-called "junk" foods. Hot meals from the deli are not allowed but as someone previously said, if say a whole chicken is marked for the cold case (when it was previously on the rotisserie) them an EBT purchase is allowed

Any cooked food should not be allowed. Any candy should not be allowed. I hear there are stores if you buy a uncooked chicken pay for it with EBT then they will cook it for you.
And the no candy with EBT will hurt valentines Day sales. They wrap up flowers fix them up all fancy and put expensive flowers along with a bunch of candy. They allow it to be purchased with EBT the company don't care anymore they are making money and allowing these lazy ass people get is basically for free. This pisses me off more than anything.
Nope, if it goes through the system it's good. And yes people will stock up on crab legs and high end cuts of meat and they beg for a turkey and ham at the foodbank.
Honestly when I was a cashier I didn't notice EBT recipients buying a crazy amount of junk or high priced meats. People against food stamps (until they or somebody they like need them) will always only see the bad that they want to see. Hispanic people with food stamps especially seemed to buy pretty healthy options. Lots of fruits and veggies. Maybe that person you see buying hot dogs, chips, and pop is having a birthday party for their 6 year old... I mean I don't know why I even say that as most against it would just say "Who cares?" Yes, there are some that take advantage of the system, just as there's people that take advantage of every other system in place. Most don't though.
People dont need food stamps. Thats why we have private charities. It also bugs me when food stamp people are talking on their $900 iPhones and carrying a $400 purse.
Actually, while the food producers would not like, I'm surprised SNAP isn't more like WIC with authorized foods. I'm not saying everything will be restricted, but some food groups can def. be limited. Actually, why cant SNAP be more like WIC in general. Make 10% of the SNAP benefit have to be used on Fresh Produce, 30% for Fresh Meats, 20% Daiy, 40% for Grocery Items. How many people have seen some SNAP available Balances over 2K? I remember on customer would just not use their monthly amount and bank the rest.
I worked at Krogers for over ten years and i seen your kind of thought daily , You dont know anything about going hungry apparently you have someone at home taking care of you, because i could never afford anything when i worked there being divorsed and 3 kids. So yes i worked every day , next to your kind and paid with food stamps at the end of my shift.

YOU are who the system was designed to help. This is why it kills me to watch the bums sucking it all dry with their entitlement bullsht----that $$ can't and won't last forever.
I hope things are better in your life for you now.
No hot foods. If you buy a cold sandwich or anything in the deli food case cold it's fine. But once its bought, you will not have it warmed for you. It's our policy.
No alchohol, ciggs, or tobacco. That's a no-brainer.

Kinda reminds me of those Emily Litella spots on the original Saturday Night Live.
What's all this fuss I hear about people buying fancy fiddles? Is the orchestra taking open auditions? Why just fiddles and not cellos and basses too. I guess the brass, woodwinds, and percussion sections don't need help either. I mean I like fiddles but sometimes they can sound like a cat in heat...
...Emily, that's vittles, not fiddles. A vittle is a morsel of food. A fiddle is a musical instrument.
Ha, we actually have the Indians/Pakistani store owners buying milk and sodas with EBT and then reselling them in their stores for profit. This welfare theft is way out of control. Meanwhile, I have to pay for my own food like adults are supposed to.
The state/government dictates this. The store does not make the rules. Please stop spewing false information. Thank you.
I worked at a high end store where people would buy high end steaks and sushi with their ebt cards and refuse to obtain another job. Home paid off no income allowed them to do this. Mean while they're not having to pay for groceries and living off their large bank nest egg they established.
I know several black people who spend every dollar they have on alcohol like the drunks they are. Mean while if they have to spend a single cent on food they won't do it. Having 3+ kids allows the government to send them up to 1k a month in food stamps. Mean while I have to pay for my groceries like an honest person. Mom and dad get to fuel their alcohol addiction while the kids live off food stamps. Call me racist if you want but I've counted about 25 black families that live like this in my store. I wouldn't mind it except some of them are quite the @$$ holes.
