One box of pens a year?!

They implemented this new system in the deli that now we have to write down customer orders every time. Fine, whatever. But we ran out of pens and notepads fairly quick. We wanted to get new pens off the shelf and do a store transfer like we used to, but we were told we're no longer allowed to do store transfers and we'd be issued one box of pens a year. I sure hope it's a big box or it's not going to last a month.

Whoever told you one box of pen's a year is an idiot. I used to order supplies and ordered pens like every 2 weeks.

It was the manager. A lot of people were mad about it but he said we had to cut costs. He's going to find out real quick that one box isn't going to cut it.

Of course this idea is 100% total insanity.  Pens are absolutely indispensable, especially in the deli dept where we require a lot of writing, such as taking chicken & food tray orders, writing on temp logs, taking notes, writing fill lists,  etc.

That said, I really think that about 80% of pens in use eventually end up at the employees' homes (they didn't just run out of ink) .........not intentionally stealing, but without thinking it is easy to slip it into your pocket and not remember until you are home.   If everyone made a conscious effort to bring back some of the random pens we have lying around in our houses, stuck in a mug on the kitchen table, dropped in the couch cushions, we could have them last a lot longer without pulling more off the shelf for a long time.

That, and lots of them are just lost, dropped on the floor or accidentally raked into the trash. Often there are pens and pencils that have rolled under the equipment, shelving and work tables.

Just transfer em. If they dont like it, contact your deli division person, and they'll slap the **** out of them. This is a company  wide initiative, and if they dont let you do it right, itll be on them

Bring one of your own pens from home and keep it on you at all times. It'll save you time to hunt down one or ask someone to borrow theirs. And if you want to be ironic and if it's the same type of pen you can get off the shelf, buy a pack of those and show the receipt to anyone who asks.

The only thing you ordered is trash bags and toilet paper.

They're trying that with us too. One box of pens a year. Pffft. Soooo with that said, what we did is take some pens off the shelf and hide them somewhere. I dont think they are going to do a "dept sweep" and see if we have hidden pens somewhere that we are not supposed to have.

I wouldn't bother. Just wait them out and I'm sure they'll change their tune. I mean what are they going to do, not give you pens if you run out? What if a customer wants to order a tray or something? "Sorry, I can't take your order, our company won't allow us to have more pens." I have a feeling that won't go over too well.

Our Kroger tried to pull the same BS with name tags not too long ago. They told us they'd only be giving us one name tag and if we lost it or whatever, they wouldn't print us new ones. Which was silly, because they're the ones who want us to wear the name badges in the first place. After a bunch of employees "lost" them they dropped the rule.
