My name is Alex Goldman and I'm a journalist in New York City. I host a podcast called Reply All. We're currently working on a story about the music at Kroger and were hoping to talk to people who work there about their feelings. We'd love to talk to you if you:
have a strong opinions about the music (love or hate!)
have spoken to a manager about how bad the music comes from
have tried to do something about the quality of the music
If any of these describe you, we would love to talk to you!
Thanks so much, and if you have any questions, feel free to let me know!
I will copy and paste my rant from 2015 below. (Little has changed in nearly 5 years since I posted that. A few newer songs are now mixed in the selection they play at my store, but the same old "oldies" have not changed in five years. Meaning this: They have NOT added any DIFFERENT oldies in 5 years.......there are tens of thousands of classic oldies (pop, country, rock, easy listening) that are potentially available from the 1950s to the 1980s. They only have a few (maybe several hundred) oldies on the playlist, and have NOT "retired" them to start playing a whole entirely new selection of oldies. This is my main complaint. IN STORE AUDIO NETWORK specializes in stale, stale and more stale). I suppose it is because they are too cheap to purchase the rights to a lot of different oldies? :
"Is the Kroger Company so poor they have to keep the playlist restricted to a tiny list of crappy songs? "Manic Monday" (played EVERY day, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday (yes, that's seven days a week, every week of the year).....most of us employees should be manic-depressives by now......
Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive" with memorable lyrics just perfect for encouraging our customers to stay in the store: "Well, now go! Walk out the door! Just turn around now, cause you're not welcome anymore!!!!!" hey Kroger corporate, are you listening?????
"Angie baby" about an insane girl. (Are you insane to shop here?)
"Afternoon Delight" by Starland Vocal Band. A song about sex encounters after 12:00 noon(?). Played so many times I now feel almost nauseated when it starts.
"These Dreams" by Heart. It might be OK if I had only heard it 50 times, instead of about 10,000 by now.
Here at my Kroger, I have to think of this hypothetical scenario: Let's pretend you are working in an office. You are always tied to your desk. To the right, over in the corner is a TV set, turned up a bit too loud. It is required by upper management to be on at all times. All of the programming consists of about 50 to 100 TV shows, BUT only one episode (and only one) of each show. One episode of Cheers, one episode of Gilligan's Island, one episode of Knot's Landing, one episode of Bewitched, one episode of Full House, one episode of Star Trek, one episode of I Love Lucy, one episode of (name a show, new or old). The TV will only show that one episode from each show, and the only surprise will be the exact order the shows will be broadcast on any certain day. But, imagine this goes on for weeks, months, maybe even years. After awhile you know all the funny bits, the upcoming scenes. It becomes increasingly boring and frustrating. But you are not allowed to watch anything except for what is shown on this particular set.
This is *almost* how I am getting to feel about the music in my store.
Kroger should start off with an entirely DIFFERENT and EXTENSIVE playlist (covering 1960s, 70s, 80s and 90s hits) so that any one particular song isn't heard that often. There are millions of songs out there. Do we have to hear the same ones every single day????"
I'm having a hard time believing that the music played at a particular grocery store is worth talking about on a podcast, or any similar media outlet. I mean, generic music that is impossible to offend anyone is played all over the place.

I have to agree. When I read it, I thought why Kroger? It's not as if the music selection is exclusive to Kroger. It's InStore Audio Network, and they don't just play in Kroger stores.
We do all kinds of stories - from the big to the small and everything in between. This is just one beat in the story - trying to get a sense of what people in the store think of the playlist. There's more to it than that, I promise.
This is exactly what I'm looking for -- could you email me @ agoldman@gimletmedia.com?
Thanks, Alex

Alex, I would love to, but I must remain completely anonymous about this subject. If it should get back to Kroger, I could be out of a job. They fire (or reprimand) for much more flimsy reasons than complaining about their music service on a public forum.

Hi, Anon,
That's totally fine, I would be happy to keep you completely anonymous. Can you email me @ agoldman@gimletmedia.com? or text 917-589-6400?

They should bring back KRGR. It was the Kroger Company radio station came by Satellite. I remember having a big C-Band dish and once picked it up from home. It was audio only. KRGR may have only been in Atlanta Division. See this thread.

This does seem legit. Google his email address and go to the website. What suprises me is he posted his email on a public forum.

Im not hard to google. You can check out the gimletmedia.com website and our show. Journalists solicit interviews like this every day, as it's how you get people to talk to you.
I have specific email/phone numbers that I used for stories so I can keep my work/life separate.
Well, how's this??? In Store Audio Network is the absolute WORST company when it comes to making decent playlists...I could listen to birds chirping or waves crashing all day long...Or even the best of Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass and it would sound better than half of what comes out of the speakers at Kroger...And let me tell you...The repetition of the same music day after day AND those stupid hour chimes and the 9 or 10 songs they constantly play day in and day out is enough to drive ANYONE batty...And by no means is Kroger the only place where their drivel is heard...You go into Target...It's heard there and many other stores and businesses...In an age where we have literally millions of choices for music, it is DISMALLY DEPRESSING that we have to listen to the same, tired playlists over and over again...Like wake up, this is the 21st century, people!!! With all the songs out there, we don't need to hear these limited playlists all the time...I've identified much of the music played on there over the years, too, so it's no secret...I've listed a lot of it here on this thread...
By the way, it does seem like they invested in a ton of music from 2017 and then, forgot there were still three years full of music that came out after that...Maybe the newest song I heard on there was something like The Jonas Brothers doing "Sucker"...I feel like I'm stuck in a time warp from three years ago...It wouldn't be so bad stuck in a time warp, if it was 70's music, like you would hear back in the day...Heck, I'd take easy listening or some classical over this garbage anyday!

I agree 100%. I wish they would compile a solid playlist of 5,000 classic original hits (and no covers) from the 1970s and leave it at that for a year. With that many songs to choose from, there would be little repetition, and you would hear a wide variety of much "better" songs. And I will admit there were a lot of crappy songs recorded in the 1970s, with lots of barely on-key singing, screeching and moaning, but even the worst of them are better than what they put together in the playlists now.

LOVE this song by Herb Alpert.................. I understand this is the only song he actually sang lead, instead of playing an instrument. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8ByJ1C0iR4
