An atheist is someone who denies the existence of a God. A young child can't comprehend the existence of God but that is not the same as denying. You can't deny something you don't know about.

A child does not believe in the existence of gods and is therefore an athiest at birth.

Well, according my Merriam Webster dictionary, an atheist is someone who denies the existence of God. The definition of the word, "Atheism" is the DISBELIEF of the existence of deity. If you look up the meaning of disbelief, it is the mental rejection of something as untrue. So once again not knowing about the existence of God is not the same as not believing in the existence of God.
