Wildly overestimated how many Thanksgiving dinners we needed
Permalink

In the middle of last month our manager gathered the deli employees up and gave us a speech about how this is going to be the busiest Thanksgiving dinner ever because no one is traveling and everyone is staying home to make Thanksgiving dinner for themselves. Our walk in cooler is crammed wall to wall with Thanksgiving stuff. They anticipated so much demand that they told us the cut off date for ordering was the 12th, way earlier than normal in our store. So far 6 people have ordered. Less than previous years.  They decided to extend the ordering period, but it hasn't helped much. We're a big store too.

Covid has trashed a LOT of family get-together plans. That's probably a big reason.

There won't be as many large family get togethers but there's still going to be the same number of people who want to eat a Thanksgiving dinner.  Instead of one person buying a 25 lb. turkey to feed an extended family, there will be more people buying smaller turkeys or just turkey breasts to feed just their immediate family.  The total amount of food bought  will be the same.  It's just going to be in smaller portions.

Why would you have a cut off date?  You simply keep a chart of how many of each dinner you have to sell and when somebody orders one, you mark it off the list.  If you have 30 deluxe dinners to sell, you simply make a mark each time someone orders one.  When you have 30 marks, you stop taking orders for deluxe turkey dinners.  You just have to make sure everybody follows those instructions.  It's probably a good idea for the deli manager to go through all the orders each day just to be sure the numbers are right.</p>

That made absolutely no sense lol

That's how we've always done it in previous years. But they thought there was going to be a huge blowout of Thanksgiving dinner orders this year so they decided to make a cut off date. It doesn't make much sense to me either. In any case now we've switched back to selling them by counting how many we've already sold since they realized we weren't going to be selling hundreds of dinners like they thought.

I never got the point of the dinners to begin with. You just gather stuff together and put it in a box, and customers can buy all that on their own if they want to. It's just mildly more convenient to get the box, but with clicklist now even that convenience is going away. Every year we get one or two customers sobbing because the dinners didn't come warm and they expected it to be heated, despite "DINNERS ARE NOT HEATED, YOU RECEIVE THEM COLD" written on top of the form in huge font.

You obviously don't get it, do you?  Four separate get togethers of four people each is going to take the same amount of food as one large get together of 16 people.

A lot of senior citizens and people don't know how or want to cook buy them.  I bought one of the turkeys one year for $5.00 when we had too many but I prefer to make my own sides.  I'm not a fan of cornbread dressing.  The texure is just off.

1st - Why does any Store have a "cut off" date 2 weeks before the actually holiday? I can understand if the store has all their inventory spoken for, but if you have a cooler full? Its not like the store is actually cooking anything! Hell, I can remember year after year the sales floor coolers were full of the Thanksgiving stuff weeks before the holiday and weeks after the holiday. OH.....I'm sure most people don't even really know what they are doing for the holiday now because of COVID!! Yes, there will be more smaller gatherings, but I don't see these customers actually getting full bird!!

The dinner boxes have to be put together.  Each component is packaged separately.  Anything that doesn't sell can be kept in the freezer and either slacked out to the sales floor or cooked and sold on the steamtable.

I heard there was gonna be more people traveling this year I think it was something on CBS News about the airlines and I think they said people would be traveling I cannot remember if they said by car or by plane.

But these hungry people are gonna want food. So the family they go visit will be buying.

People are STILL going to get together pandemic or not. Let's just hope they use common sense this time so we won't have an even more rise in Covid cases we already have due to the Election campaigns and Halloween get togethers

If you think the Election or Halloween spikes were anything, HOLIDAYS infections will be 20X-100X more.  Becoming infected isn't the issue, it becoming infected and needing medical treatment.  Most major/big hospitals only have 400-900 beds, and only 1/8 of those may be an ICU beds.  COVID isn't the only medical issue occurring, everyone forgets other illnesses and medical issues are still happening.

Hospitals are taken for grated until the need exceeds their capacity.  Remember people, Hospitals run on scientific understanding and "alternative facts" do not play into the equation.  Anyone seen the news of refer trucks being used as morgue? Hospitals are stressed and their staffing is being depleted.  If you believe working in the stores is "stressful" and too much hard work, just think about the medical field.  Yes, illness and death is something nurses and doctors signed up for, but I'm sure they didn't sign up for it being 24/7.

The same thing that happens every night, Pinky.

We put a Woohoo tag on it and sell it the next day.  Or not.  What does it matter?

Update: They tried to tell us to stop taking orders on the 24th and that was the new deadline.  Then the next day they told us to disregard that and take orders up until Thanksgiving day.
