Did I get bumped
Permalink

I am a "new guy" (been at Kroger for since Sept 2020) and I put in for Thanksgiving off, I did get it but when I rechecked the written schedule again today, the day I asked for was crossed out and i was scheduled for 5 hours. I have plans already. Did someone bump me?  Because I saw another person had the day off and i had their 5 hours.

What will happen when i don't show up? I am taking this day off because I was approved originally.

You got bumped. 5 hours? Is it morning shift? If it is you'll be fine. As for just not showing up, that's s nice way to irritate them. Not good especially if you're the new guy. How did you get Thanksgiving off anyways? At our store its "all hands on deck."

And if you get bumped at my store and still take the day off, you come back to VERY p*ssed off co-workers due to them trying to cover your shift and do their jobs as well.

A lot depends if you're still on probation.  If you are, you're screwed and can be fired for any reason.  If you're past probation, then changes to the schedule have to be done by Saturday afternoon.  Some stores it's 12:00.  Some it's 3:00.  Mine is 6:00.  Any changes made after the cut off time have to be approved by all parties involved.

I haven't worked a Thanksgiving Day for probably the last 15 years or so.  My busiest time is the days leading up to Thanksgiving.

You may still be on probation. Meaning depending when you were hired in sept, your probation may end in Nov or even December. Even if you are not on probation being as you are still "new" you have NO seniority at all unless someone is hired AFTER you. Dont just take the day off as it can and will lead to problems.

Trust me: when I was new, I was bumped from a day and I still took the day off. The ONLY saving grace was that nobody explained how the bumping works. So I kept my job.

I'm very sorry you chose Kroger.  It is not possible to get the days off that you request.  Call in sick.  If ANYONE asks stick to that story.  Post in social media that you are sorry you had to miss whatever due to being sick.  HR may start calling telephone numbers associated with you trying to get information.  If you have no seniority the union rules may not help.  Company likes to mess with new people real bad sometimes to see how they react.  There is no right way to deal with this horrible company.

I give nearly 100% of time off requests. Anyone I really need, I try to negotiate and they usually only needed part of the day and I work around it. No schedule writer has time to deal with mass call outs. Life's too damn short and you get enough of them anyway. I've been a dept head in many stores now and I've never been unable to work around vacations or days off. It's been a pain in the ass at times but I always found a way. The results weren't always pretty but it was good enough to keep it moving

Next time take a picture of the schedule. once it posted they are not suppose to change it. That way when they cross it out like they did you can just ignore that and when some one cries to you about it show them that picture and say no I was off. They cant say **** then.

This whole 'bumping' bullsht is the one thing about unions I seriously hate. I don't care how much longer on the job you've been than me, I aint your bitch and you don't get to ass burgle me like that. So yeah. Call off. Like someone else said, keep to that story, but DON'T POST ON SOCIAL MEDIA ANYTHING, and move on. New, on probation, what ever, if your work has been good they're not gonna pink you just for this.

Happy bird day. Enjoy it away from Kroger biggrin

I always just ignored when I was bumped and worked my original schedule. If someone questioned me about it I'd just say oops I didn't realize. Sometimes they'd be mad but I didn't care. One time a manager wanted to send me home so I could work in the evening because I was bumped from day shift and I told her if I went home I wasn't coming back for the day.

I am with this.  This horrible company pays you 9 bucks an hour and thinks you should schedule your entire life around the 20 hours a week they give you, working 1st shift one day, 2nd shift the next and then back to 1st shift again, weekends and holidays.  They give nothing and take everything all for 180 bucks a week.  This will pay your cell phone bill, maybe.  Hell, even Walmart starts their employees out at 11 bucks an hour and that is also a hellhole but not quite as bad of a hellhole.  I've worked at both places.  Both places are sweatshops, expect so much but give so little.  Retail just sucks ass anyway you cut it.  I say f--k em.  Take a picture or make a copy of the hung schedule every Friday afternoon at around 6 pm.  If you are off that day, drop in and do this.  If they can't decide what they want you to work on Sunday by Friday at 6 pm, then tough s--t.  Whatever that schedule says at 6 pm, that is what I would work the next week.  If they make any changes after this for the following week and a manager hasn't said anything to you about it by 6 pm on Friday and you agreed to it, then play stupid and act like you didn't even see the schedule change.  Then if they write you up, call the union and show them the copy and date you took the picture.  They wont mess with you again after you do this.  They might cut your hours down to the minimum your contract requires them to work you though.  I know from my own experience working in this hellhole, the managers can be very vindictive.  This company has some of the most ruthless upper management in business and it all starts with rodney mcMullen and the 21 million dollar bonus he just pocked in June after firing all those store managers last year.  As long as those top 10 people in the corporate office get theirs, they don't give a f'c* what happens to anybody else or the company either.

Best response. You nailed it. As I mentioned to that asshat in an above part of this thread, I don't work in retail any more.. but when I did, everything you described was spot on. As you said, FK em. All retail companies and their managers care about is the almighty dollar, and to hell with the employees who actually do the work.

Holidays are black out periods for requests. Period.

If they don't have enough staff to select for working they pick form lowest seniority first then work up. Those are the rules. They're pretty normal for across all ufcw contracts. You won't see a holiday off for at least five years.

One more thing they must give you 48 hrs notice.  Otherwise it's a union violation

Then management shouldn't have given it to him. But they did. So it's on them. Period.
