I'm about to have surgery that will have me out of work for about 4 months. Hr originally told me I have to take all my vacation first before loa will pay me. When I finally got the metlife number yesterday she also told me if I want disability pay I have to contact the health insurance and have papers filled out and give them to her. I'm a bit confused. Does metlife pay me while I'm out? Does disability or is it both? I feel a bit dumb having to ask.
I believe the reason they are telling you that you should use your vacation days is because medical LOA doesn't start kicking in until after 2 or 3 WEEKS and you'll need to contact the insurance company who will send you paperwork that needs to be filled out by you and your doctor (if I'm not mistaken) so that you'll be able to gain full benefits..

Loa is for leave 30+ days. If less than 2 weeks request two weeks time off. Just do single day off requests in esced as either vacation or off. Loa is designed to protect your job. If it's accompanied by a dr's note legally they need to accept it. It's like taking a water bottle away from a cashier and they have a dr's note for water due to low blood pressure issues.
