You need to be friendly and smile till it hurts. This is one of the many duties of the associate. We the customers are top priority, were always right and we make your little pay check possible. So suck it up associate and always VALUE US!!
I would ask ....why are you TIRED of being "friendly", its called just being personable and outgoing. REMEMBER, you took a job in a position that would cause you to interacts with people (customers that allow you to earn $$). I would almost question how many people are "TIRED" of telling you to be an actual person and acknowledge people (customers).

I think you may be misunderstanding the point of the OP. I think I understand what they are getting at. Yes, Of course we are supposed to be friendly. Got it. True! But we get sick and tired of the FORCED, PHONY "be extra friendly" commands, the "pretend friendliness" directives that Kroger Corporate wants to push on us, at the SAME TIME that we are given more work and less time to get it done in. Our hours are cut, we feel miserable, overworked, tired, and yet we MUST be more and more friendly to everyone??!!?? Please!!
I DO want to be friendly to everyone. But I don't like to be ORDERED to be "friendly" by corporate bigwigs (Ironically enough in many cases) that are the perfect example of COLDNESS and UNFRIENDLINESS when judging by their actual attitude and ACTIONS toward Kroger employees. It's that phoniness that I hate.
At my store, the front end posted hand-written signs (about 11 by 8 inches in size) that were posted at EVERY SINGLE CHECKOUT LANE, right there in plain sight of the customers and it said something like "DON'T FORGET TO SAY HELLO AND THANK YOU!!!"
That is so STUPID it is hard to explain just how stupid it is. It is basically telling the customers in plain language: "This is a theatrical performance" , "We are forcing all of our employees to say preprogrammed scripts whether or not they really mean it" , "We may or may not be sincere in our appreciation of your patronage at this store, but we are being ordered to say certain things to you".

No its called a waste of time. Most people dont care to know your name or be asked hows your day? Derp. Same old tired needless banter. OST people wanna go in get their **** and leave. Most people know the management doesnt care so they dont want their fake ass in their face. Were there to work no be a shoulder to cry on.

Its good to see this kind sir knows the value of customers. Unlike most of these piss poor associates who do nothing at all other then taking long bathroom breaks, numerous smoke breaks, playing fart nite or just openly gay touching each outside or down the paper towel tissue paper aisles.
We were introduced to a Pig's Head specific training module. Same old stuff with new names, plus the victim gets the option of having their product left in a grab cooler (not provided) while they get the hell away from the counter and hurry up with the shopping. Consumers are also made to compete with machines for speed.
In my department, I've experimented with hostility and ignoring customers outright.
Accidental hungover hostility has resulted in death-threats from one single psycho, so I've started carrying a pistol. That guy is a goddamn psycho, so shooting him would be worth more than getting fired. Honestly, I'd let him punch me a few times in the face if it meant I could ****ing shoot him. That's probably how it's going to go unless I get a better job quick, but either way is ok. That's how bad it is.
Otherwise, active hostility is going well. Complaints have solely been directed to the sympathetic coworker who works concurrent shifts. The "lead" only works early mornings, which is not work.
Ignored customers just steal outright or go elsewhere. I love it. I don't get a cut, it's not my problem, and I get my work done.
I'd drink on the clock, but I'm worried it would ruin drinking for me.
