Staffing is so short the service desk is closed. What is next?

Its funny, I saw a notice that they are already "Hiring for the Holidays". Hell, every other year they would start hiring for the holidays 1 week before Thanks Giving! If you can't hire and retain people now, its all just a joke. I'm actually surprised they haven't installed bag carousel at all the register to not need bagger anymore. In reality, the whole shopping experience should be revisited. I'm thinking at some point they are going to find out ELMS is an issue and over hire and "Add back" hours previously eliminated. You can hired people, but can't retain people after they find out they are the only cashier for 5 hours.

Ours is closed after 5 or so every evening as well, and we have only 2 Starbucks employees, both on vacation, so there is no one to train our new hire. We have had to close the store early a couple times due to having no-one to close the last hour. Our deli and bakery regularly close early, who knows what is next!

The service desk is closed at a lot of stores and has been for years. When someone wants service we call someone over there to assist. Generally a manager. This isn't new. Med/Small stores we've never had the service desk fully staffed. Never. Most stores if the cashier can generally grab things from service center for you. Don't be stupid and stair at the registers until someone magically appears. That's not how kroger operates. If we don't know we won't come.

 This sounds more like what they would do. Like McDonalds started closing early.

 I do not believe that the one at my store opens from 8am until 9pm. Customer service person get's there 7:30 am. Customers start walking up she tells them 8 am and they get mad because she is standing there. But she is usually getting things ready for the day like break times sweep times ETC. That is why half the time the sweep schedule never got posted or was posted after I got off. And this is also a reason Customer is not always right when they say "You are standing there you should help me"

 I have never understood why they haven't automated the cart, sweep and any other schedule the FE or other department make for daily tasks.  In reality, I would believe it would be a simple process, and could utilize eScheduler.  I always love how they want to take on the big things to "automate" or redesign, but don't think about the smaller low laying fruit that is the most unimportant, but necessary.

Do you mean make the departments like Meat, Produce, Bakery, ETC do the sweeps? I think that would be a disaster. We had 2 wide dust brooms one for the front one for the back. If Departments did the sweep the Brooms would never be taken back to the proper place and would end up broke all the time or whatever. It's like a department like Dairy they never even emptied the mop bucket when they mopped up milk. They would just bring the mop bucket to the back filled with milk. Or sometimes I seen them leave it up front in the hallway going to the restroom. Couesty Clerks need to do lot and sweep they are more of them. Utility Clerks can sweep and do whatever else goof off hide in restroom play fortnight etc.

 Actually, I have never understood why stores don't just have a janitor position.  It would be easier to hire for and allow more accountability....staffed 5a-9p/6a-10p to take are of all the bathroom, trash, floors, outdoor clearing, other random cleaning assignments.
