As a schedule writer I can say its not that we cant read or understand the request. We understand it just fine. It's that we CHOOSE to put you down for a full shift because it is needed.

Check your contract. Mine (Louisville) specifically says that the store shall be staffed with volunteers on Thanksgiving Day. If there are not enough volunteers, then they are to schedule by inverse seniority.
Thanksgiving is a throw away day for sales, stores are only really open for the Thanksgiving Deli meals and the last minute items. The issues is having enough staffing for Sunday-Wednesday....

Waste of time when people put their availability down you need to follow it. Needed or not oh well not my problem
Yeah I figured lol. I honestly enjoy working under pressure, and if we were fully staffed I'd probably be bored, but even now there are some days I wonder how our store is gonna stay open. This is my first holiday season working, but I've heard it's crazy! I imagine there are more call outs or ncns than usual too, but I guess whoever's there just has to keep on keeping on.
I'm worried for the week leading up to Thanksgiving.... maxed out hours and no staff is going to be great in pickup.... i'm not looking forward to the 12+ hour days i'm sure i'll be working.
Same with us. Our last dept personnel left the bakery at 4pm today. We shut it down. They've been calling our cc's to take cake orders, retrieve cakes that have been ordered, and to write on the cakes if needed. No cc or UC responded. Checkers were loosing their sh*t because no one went over. I mean what the hell do they want? Cc's and u.c.'s are NOT trained in the bakery, paid to assist in bakery, so why would they go over there?

Our bakery department is down to just one baker, and he's going on vacation in few weeks. Some days we only have two people the entire day.
We had zero at one point. Department closed.
It's hard to imagine, but at one time we had 10 to 12 people in the bakery department. Granted some of them only worked 4 hours a day but there were enough people to schedule two cake decorators, two bread bakers, a table person in charge of putting out pre-made stuff, a person in charge of baking pies and cookies, a person to help with the pies and cookies and help close, and a closer who finished packaging and did the clean up.
Yup, gonna be real fun at our store where we have 4 people, one of them part-time, to staff the entire meat/seafood dept. A few days we close at 6pm because we have no closers. Several days we have 2 people for the entire day. Feel the Uplift!!

But now you wanna give them out cause their short handed! I laugh all the way to the time clock and leaving out the door. You can keep those hours!
No one in bakery today at 3pm, I was asked to go over and write on a cake for a customer. I go over there, the lady looks at me and says, are you sure you can do it? I laugh and say yes I was in bakery for years, i was a bakery manager here a while ago, it's no problem.
It's funny though even though i'm now the pickup supervisor, i'm still sent over there to help in a pinch.

Its like when they hired anyone and everyone when COVID first started and gave out whatever hours people wanted, only to then not give these people any hours after a month. If Store Managers are really accountable for their stores, let them staff their stores the way they seem fit. All retailers are built on the principle of a constant flow of new hiring, maybe the company should go back to how it was in the 70's-80's. Paying decent wages for the time and having to basically know someone to get hired.
