I got bumped for Thanksgiving
Permalink

I am a  new hire, this is my 4th month working. I requested Thanksgiving off and it got approved because I checked the schedule yesterday. Today when I double checked it my day off was scribbled out and a 10-3 was put in. I checked another co-worker and noticed that he had Thanksgiving off and I had his 10-3.

Can i get in trouble if I don't show up? I honestly do not feel like showing up. What can I tell them the next day when they ask why I never showed up?

Just not showing up has always been a recipe for destruction. You'll most likely be written up at the very least. Your best bet is to either talk to your supervisor about it beforehand or call off.

Of course youd get in trouble. You got bumped for the day. When I write my dept schedule and when someone with lesser seniority was bumped in my dpet, I made sure to let the person that got bumped know that they were bumped. That way if they didnt show up, I can say "Uhh, I DID let you know and remind you at least 3-4 times." That way they could not use the excuse of "I didnt know."

Simply put you just have to deal with it. Since you're still "new" not much (anything) you can do if you are the newest guy/girl.

However, if someone got hired after you and got the day off, you can bump them for it, but its something youd have to work out for yourself.

Schedule is filled in with the most senior staff selecting first. Once all shifts have been filled, then they can force fill shifts with staff from lowest in seniority to highest. Sorry but these are the rules. The shifts generally go to the individual with the most availability first then they jump around on the list until all slots have been filled. Once all slots have been filled and there's remaining slots they'll force fill them.

Yes this company sucks. It's almost worth it to work a job where you get all the holidays off. I didn't get holidays off until almost my 5th year of employment. Once you find a store where you're 1/2 way up the seniority roster you'll get requests off.

I hate to say it but this is why I suck up the front end. There's enough staff to allow almost guaranteed days off.

Now if you work at a store where the most senior staff member has like 30+ years with company, and you're 15 yrs and still bottom of the barrel. Then you'll have to transfer out to a smaller store where your 15 yrs puts you at the top of the seniority list. That's what happened to me. I had 10 yrs and was still bottom of the barrel in seniority.

Since you requested the day off and it was approved, I think you have this one. I didn't think someone could bump another person that requested the day off.

Things unfortunately happen and a schedule might have to change last minute. Someone could be also be being a prick and decide they want that day off instead. Either way, you can bump someone after a schedule is printed out. It's kind of bad faith for the scheduler to switch the schedule without saying anything. I'd ask and make sure it is correct and if it is, welcome to the "Never Have Thanksgiving Off" club.

Holidays major holidays are mandatory for all. The only people who really get them off are those highest in seniority. New hires won't see holidays off for the first 2-4 years. How the hell our fes got this week off as vacation I don't know. Now there's no fes and staff do what ever the hell they want.

OP here... so I decided to take the day off. My family was concerned st first, but I showed them the picture I took on my phone. Yesterday, my phone was ringing off the hook constantly mostly from Kroger.

I got a few glares coming in this morning, but if management tries to make a fuss, all I have to do is show them my pic and I'm in the clear.

Yeah, if they changed it - in handwriting, for chrissakes - at the last minute and didn't personally communicate that to you, **** 'em. There's too much of that bs in this company.

According to schedule practice by-laws they can do this. Recently a coworker who decided to call out rather than show up for her forced shift we recently had to write up. She requested the day off but due to lack of staff she refused to show up for shifts in her day off requests. Nothing special it was just give me the day off. When you have a job you are responsible for the shifts be you pick them or they assign them to you. This is one of the few jobs where the company doesn't force a schedule upon you.

True. If she requested the day off but was scheduled anyway, and che chose to take the day off in spite of being scheduled, the. The write up was legit.

OP took a picture of his/her scheduled off day, but due to seniority someone decided to bump them. OP did mention when they re-checked they noticed another co-worker took it from under him. So he KNEW that he was bumped. Management should have let him know if they did not. Either way, he should have questioned it instead of taking it upon himself to take it off.

Now he may be under radar depending on management
