They should be asking to leave your items like that, as the store would the be responsible for their protection. It's simple, the RX Manager should simple say.....no phones will working, then take action if needed.

the pharmacy manager has stated repeatedly that no phones should be out. we even had a mandatory meeting after work a few weeks ago, but people are still using their phones.

i think that is a deficit in enforcement, but regardless of my opinion i would like to know what company policy is before i stand firm in refusing to comply

It sounds to me that you and millions of other people are addicted to their cellphones.  The manufacturers design them and market them in a way so people literally become addicted to them.  You do not need to have your cellphone with you all the time.  People today spend half their time working and the other half wasting time on their phones texting or whatever.  Unless someone has been in an accident or is dying, whatever it is can wait until you're off the clock.  Leave your cellphone in your locker.

More than likely you need to comply if you want to keep your job.  They would have to fire most of the employees in the store if they didn't comply.  You might get fired because you are non union.  Unless you want to take it to the Supreme Court and let them decide if cell phones should be banned from the workplace.

I don't have an Employee handbook in front of me but I vaguely remember it stating that cell phones are to be left in the locker along with purse and other personal belongings.

You need to call HR and ask them what the rules are.  More than likely, they will stand behind the Pharmacy managers' decision.  The manager shouldn't single out a single department so every person in the store should need to put their cell phones in a basket.

I work overnight and many times I would like to ban ear buds while working.  I have to scream at top of my lungs to get someones' attention.  It really ticks me off when I have to tell someone to end a phone conversation.

The reason I do not ban cell phones:  There is a possibility of a dire emergency and most people do not know how to use a landline or how to dial an outside line.  Or, might not be able to get to a store phone.

My suggestion is that you get a decoy phone and put that in the basket.  Turn the ringers off on your real phone and  never pull your real phone out unless it is a life or death emergency.

It places the cell phone in the basket or it gets the hose again.

Employers can deny you water. The most basic element of life. So, yeah, you gotta give up your cell phone. You are a slave.

I don't work in pharmacy, but I have wouldn't hand over my phone. I bought it. I pay for the monthly service. It's my personal property. The only times I have it out in front of customers is when I check the time/date (I've been asked what time or the days' date is) or if there is an emergency.

Tell them that this isn't grade school and that you are a dignified and grown adult.

Tell them that if they are going to treat you like a child, you double dog dare them to write you up.  Just so you can show it to the union.

No. Cell phone use is protected by federal law. It's why school kids are allowed to have theirs in the class rooms.

If anyone comes to you and demands it from you, tell em it's in your car. And then dare em to try a strip search, at which point you'll call the cops for sexual harrassment. They'll stfu fast. biggrin

Are they going to replace my cellphone with phone of MY choice if it gets stolen? We all know of their "wonderful" invisible security...
No? Then I LOVE to tell you, putting my phone in a basket for (NON) safekeeping or in my locker, is NOT going to happen.

Not only is it NOT happening happening, I'll keep it on me like always

As mentioned before, unless someone has been in an accident or they're dying, you have absolutely no reason for you to have your cell phone out while you're working.  I've noticed productivity has gone way down since people started carrying their phones with them all the time.  By way down I mean tasks are literally (and yes I do mean literally) taking twice as long to complete.

I never have my phone out when working. If I need to check the time I have a wris watch. But I'm STILL NOT putting my phone in a basket. It stays on me at all times, no exceptions at work. Ever.

I haven't worn a watch in over 30 years.  My phone is a fancy pocket watch...

But, since I carry a zebra with me now, I don't really need it.  A comanager mentioned that they are going to add a phone app to the zebra.

Seriously?  Why is the word wrist watch censored?  The missing letters are t w a t and that might spell a word that's offensive to people who get their feelings hurt easily, but it's part of a larger word.  Perhaps the censoring program should only censor words if they stand alone.  That is only censor them if there's a space before the first letter and a space after the last letter.

I was wondering the same thing...I even tried seperatingnthr word and it still came out as wris****ch. Maybe because it does have the t w a t word in wris****ch.

No. It stays on me. Not in a basket, not in my locker, on me. Are they going to pay for a lost phone? No. So with that said, my phone stays on me. End of story. They'll have to live with it.
Plus putting my phone in a basket benefit me how again?

Nobody said it was suppose to benefit you.  You don't go through life thinking everything is for your benefit and the world revolves around you.  That's part of the problem with society today along with you're a victim and you're not responsible for your actions.

That's not a phone silly.  That is a Zebra touch computer.  The best thing since man invented the wheel.  kroger has us do everything with it.  Clock in, do surveys, order, etc.

The only company policy is "what can we get away with"? I would be concerned about the devices getting hacked while out of your control.

I am retired from from Kroger and when I still worked I never had my phone on me on the floor. I always had my phone in my purse locked in my locker. There was one time where I forgot to wear my watch to work so I turn my phone on silent where it would not ring and I kept it in my pocket. I just did that so I would have a way to see what time it was. You are not allowed to have your phone on you while working or that is the way it used to be. I have been retired from Kroger just three years and the reason I got out was I could the handwriting on the wall Kroger was getting awful to the employees trying to micro manage us but I do think employees should keep their phones locked up while working.

My phone remains in my pocket. I never have my.phone out on the floor except to quickly glance at the time. It's not set on vibrate, but again, I leave my phone in my pocket whilst at work.
Plus why wouldn't want to run all the way to my locker to check any missed calls on my breaks or lunch? It's a waste of my time.

Also when I use the restroom, I do check to see if I had any missed calls. If I do, I return them on my breaks and or lunch.

So therefore, my phone is fine right where it is and doesn't need to. E locked up.

I totally agree.  I won't mention what department I work in, but there's this one particular task that has to be done nearly every day.  I used to do it in 3 to 4 hours.  The two people that take turns doing it now take 7 to 8 hours to complete the same task.  Because of staffing issues, I had to do that particular task one day last week.  It took me 3 1/2 hours to complete.  Why did it take me half the time to complete as anybody else?  Because I wasn't checking my phone every two minutes.
