So mixed answers are among managers and associates.
There are managers whom will give mixed answers between charging bags and not charging bags.
Do any of you decide whether to charge or not to charge bags? What do you all say and do if manager catches you for not charging bags?
Too much plastic just gets thrown away yearly its such a waste. Customers need to pay for bags period. Either bring a couple open boxes and box it up in your car or buy reusable bags.if customers dont like it then gtfo. I cant wait for the day they abolished plastic bags so I can hear these *******s cry and just smile in their entitled faces. Bastards
If its required by law in your area, charge customers for bags they use. If anything you might establish a "Max" for bigger orders, but not charging is only going to cause issues down the road. Ex: If its a huge order, charging for 10 bags, when 15+ were used.
I never understood how not charging a few cents for bags is going to cause issues. What we do rather than charge each bag, we charge one bag or say they paid with EBT.

That must be in all the blue Liberal states or in the blue areas in red states. It just sounds like something they'd come up with.

I guess my state is paying that $250 fine. My state is among the 8 states to ban plastic bags usage at large retail stores.

Your state must of officially passed the plastic ban law and started charging for bags.
You charge for the handled paper and the thick plastic reusable bags. The other sizes 420, #8 are free.
Customers on food cards you still need to charge them. When they slide their ebt or nutrition card it will subtract the bag fee. No you can't just give them the bags.
You need to inquire about a bag at the start of the order. In a state where you pay for the bag it is the cashier responsibility to inquire at the beginning of the order. If a customer says no you put items back in the cart. IF they run short on reusable bags you can ask if they want any bags as well.

Other cashiers don't charge for bags. Nothing is said to them. Customers know the company charges bags but asks "do you charge bags" every time they shop in division 701. Management picks on selective cashiers to not charge bags and the same with certain customers. This includes regular customers and "secret shoppers" paid by department managers. Added with real secret shoppers. Then there's an associate paying her friends to cause trouble.
Expect to get harassed by the anti gov people who hate control over their life. Let them have their way for a month or so then tell them to stop it professionally and just say "Yes or no please." I honestly won't have anything but that. If I get a really big di--ck of an @$$ hole I say it like it is and end it. No beating around the bush with politeness will get through their tick heads.

I only know of it happening on the coasts, but in reality just ban plastic bags all together and made business provide paper bags. Its funny how plastic bags are the environmental issue, but all the new delivery vans haven't raise eyebrows....
