I've been with the company going on 8 years. My anniversary is July 31st. I have 120 unused vacation hours. Can these carry over into the next anniversary? Or do I lose my vacation and just get handed a check instead?
Also, vacation hours are renewed every anniversary, yes? If I use all 120 of these hours, will 120 more be added?
Vacations are renewed every January 1st of each year, not your anniversary date. The only thing that happens on your anniversary date is you receive additional weeks of vacation if you're entitled to them. The vacation calendar comes out in January of each year. It will have each person's name on it and the number of weeks of vacation they get. If they are due another week, it will say one additional week due after such and such date. Vacations must be taken by the end of the 13th period. That's usually the end of January. They do not carry over from year to year.
?? What division are you in? I'm in southwest I don't think I hit 3 weeks vacation until 10 years! It was something like 1 week for the first 3 years, 2 weeks for the next 7 years, and then 3 weeks at 10 year, and then its every 5 years we get another week, and eventually after 30 years with the company I'll have capped off at like 5 weeks vacation because this isn't like the Old contracts with the senior staff who get about 2 months paid time off a year.
But yes, they are correct that vacation time has to be used by the end of the year, same as personal days, use it or lose it. And by lose it- they don't cash it out and hand you a check, you'll just Lose it.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could accumulate vacation time from year to year? If that were true and I saved a week each year starting with the year I reached 3 weeks vacation, I would have enough time saved up to be off six months.
That much?!! It should cash out on your anniversary date. personal day expires. According to the rules of this company you saying it carries over year to year doesn't make sense. Sick pay you are allowed a certain number of hrs in your bank and that's it. That carries over year to year. I use mine be it they like it or lump it. I always have a minimum of 2 weeks on hand. Because you just don't know.
I learned a long time ago...Take your vacations...I used to just let them lapse and I lost them...I'd work so much and forget about them until the end of the year when someone would force me to take them, but by then, I couldn't choose the weeks I wanted...But, they're still yours and they're part of the benefits you accrue after working for a long time...The older you get, the more you'll appreciate taking them...Why would you NOT take advantage of what's yours???
And by lose it- they don't cash it out and hand you a check, you'll just Lose it.
Damn that sucks.
That's odd...I thought they were supposed to cash you out for unused vacations.
I always used mine up so I'm not entirely sure. But maybe that's why people have been working beyond their shifts (just hanging out on the clock after said shift is done) or clocking in and hiding out until the shift is done to get paid for "lost" vacations. I mean it's not that hard to do...

They are suppose to pay out any unused vacations and personal days. Those are considered to be earned income and if they're not paid, it's a form of wage theft. Also, if you quit, you are suppose to be paid for any remaining vacation time that you have already earned.
