Supervisor said I should have gone back to give him his refund. Customer was older black man. Do I mention what happened to my store manager?
Tough question about the fuel center. Ask your union shop steward. I would have asked the customer to wait until your break is over.
People get fired for working off the clock. I knew one lady that came in and worked 15 minutes early for her shift to set up SCO and clock in at her scheduled time. She was suspended pending termination.
Hard to be out of sight at the fuel center. I suppose you could have clocked in, did the refund, and then clocked back out to finish your break.

Why couldn't the supervisor or whoever was working at the fuel center give the customer a refund? I know technically, since you're being paid for them, that you're still on the clock while on a break but you're also entitled to a full uninterupted break. I always take off my apron and name badge when I go on breaks and lunches. If I'm not wearing a name badge, then I'm not working.

Anyway to answer the question, when I was stopped to help look for a lost child in the store by a distraught parent. We found the child who was hiding in our stock area because he was upset that he couldnt get a candy and wandered off when the parent's back was turned. After thr child was found, (he was ok) I started my break over from the very beginning.
Go to www.dol.gov Then the wage and hour division. The United States department of Labor says you should not work off the clock. If you are asked to do so and work of the clock, the Department of Labor can fine your employer
$1500 per person per incident. File a complains with DOL. Your employer will not know you are the complainant.

This is the correct response. Either say no and Go to break or handle it and start the break over. I would add to it by adding a few more extra mins for break
