Saw that happen with a guy once. He came in to the store all flustered, talkin the same stuff you did; went to the time clock.....and couldn't clock in. A manager came along and pulled him into the office. A few minutes later he came back out with an envelope in hand, red as hell in the face, and hustled back out super-fast.
Many people think you have to actually be at work before they can be fired. Not so.
