hello my vacation was not approved due short staff. I submitted my request at least two weeks in advance. Can they really deny me for this reason.

Sure can. 'Needs of the business' they'll call it.

And forget about that weak-ass union helping you, they'll back the company 100%.

Was this a last minute vacation request or did you have it written down on the official vacation calendar that's posted back in January? If it's the latter and the vacation was previously approved, then they have to let you go.

That's a very interesting question.

What's your local union?

They always mess with me that way. Impossible to plan. Gave up. The way to do it is to quit the bastards forever. That is how you do it.

When I fill out my vacation request I *always* cross out "needs of the business" and initial it. I have never had an issue doing this.

When your anniversary rolls around and you haven't been able to take that vacation, make sure to ask payroll about getting paid out for it. Always works for me, and that double (or greater) paycheck is always nice. Sometimes I intentionally don't take some of my vacation weeks just so I can get paid out for it.

That's what I did. I had a vacation all planned out, plane tickets paid for, hotel etc. It was pre-approved. Come to find out, that they crossed out my vacation on the paper schedule, and penciled me in.

It's gonna be fun to hear about how they handled things when I come back from vacation...I'm gonna screen my calls and if I have to put a temporary block to keep Kroger from calling me.

Your union steward is suppose to have copies of all the vacation schedules. It would be interesting to see what that one says. If it was changed during the approval period, they should've told you and said why. If it was changed after, and you go ahead and go, and they try to write you up, then you should file a grievance. They can't keep telling people they can't take their vacations. It's their own fault they don't have enough help.

Please refer to the scheduling practices in your union handbook at ufcw. yes they can do this. If you have a paid plane ticket put your foot down about it. I paid 7k on a trip once and said look i'm going or else. Just quit and re-apply at another location if done in a 2 yr time frame and with company that has ufcw they will honor all your company time.
