Is produce quality getting worse?

Is it just me, or is the quality of produce coming in getting worse and worse by the day?

I cant tell you just how much low-quality product Ive seen in the last couple of years and I visit a lot of grocery stores! Ive seen it everywhere!

Weve scanned out and diverted enough of it recently, thats for sure!

It seems like out of all the boxes that come in, half of the product is moldy, fuzzy, wrinkled, shriveled and otherwise unfit for consumption, before it even reaches the shelves!

Sure, the slightly bruised items and still edible product can be red-bagged, but then you see salad bags with no dates, broken bags that should have been sealed, rotten and russeting lettuce everywhere, no quality control, etc. Tomatoes and sweet potatoes can be the worst with this! Dont even get me started on the strawberries and raspberries or shriveled-up corn!

And yet, the local farmers markets never seem to have this problem! Wonder why that is?confuse

I was on vacation some time back to a small town in the back woods to visit some friends and family and a friend of the family warned me not to buy the produce at the local chain in town, coincidentally the ONLY store in town! She told me that this store preys on the elderly! It is the only major grocer there and the quality of the produce is subpar at best, so I know this is not just a Kroger issue

However, the next nearest grocery store to this town is a good 15-20 miles away and that chain store knows that the elderly folks in town are not gonna travel that far for better produce, so they get away with it, and then, they charge these older folks an arm and a leg just to eat subpar-quality healthy food! No competition, either, other than the beer, guns and ammo shop that puts out a barrel, fills it with a few green potatoes, some half-rotted apples, and maybe a mushy banana or two and calls it a day!

She says she ONLY buys from the farmers markets and fruits and veggies in season and nothing else now!

And thinking about it, do we REALLY know how long the produce has been sitting BEFORE it reaches the stores, either on a truck, in a warehouse or a cold room?

I havent forgotten all those romaine recalls, either!

All I know is that I remember what produce used to be like, when they had giant fans to cool the departments, when the lights didnt shine so brightly on the potatoes as to make them spoil faster and we didnt have this expectation that we could get ANY type of produce ANY time of the year, no matter if it was in season or not! My, how times have changed!

But, am I just imagining things are getting worse or is it actually happening? What stuff are you seeing in your stores, people?

The word, "Seen" is the perfect tense form of the verb, "to see".  It requires an auxiliary verb or helping verb like has, have, or had.  He has seen. I have seen. I had seen.  The past tense of see is saw.  You saw someone.  You did not seen them.  Also, someone is one word.

I haven't ridden a seesaw since grade-school.  Too busy riding your mom.  She's worried about you, you know.

The quality of produce has been reduced to Winco/Walmart level, but prices can be triple unless you hit the sale or loss leader.  Or if produce doesn't have enough hours to change signs.

Gotta buy them stocks back.  A true shareholder would know.  And gloat.

Thats nice, but when you just received a shipment of product today like salads that are dated the 13th, and today isummmthe 13th, that doesnt really help anythingMaybe your salads or your carrots have no dates at all on the packagesThen again, maybe you havent even looked at themMy store manager informed me that we still get credit for this stuff and was very interested to see stuff like that coming in

No, it's getting worse. The warehouse quality sucks. Our store manager pulled the warehouse product because we kept having a huge loss due to the bad product. We our through our contracted local vender for most of our product now. The company has also severely reduced hours so staff can not do the job duties that they need to and we are often cut short on being able to complete most of what we need to do. I honestly do not know how much longer I can stomach up this company. 15 yrs is a long time of your life to give to a company. I think I'm moving on and seeking additional options.
