Just curious if any of the rest of you are dealing with thisWe have a store manager who INSISTS we are fully staffed, but are we? A few short years ago, I remember us having at least 10 people in our department aloneWe had plenty of people to do everything that needed to be doneBut, little by little, we started to get chipped awayOne department manager retired after 50+ year with the company, one moved up into store management and yet another is working for the competitionNow, we have a manager who is a good guy and a friend, but moved up in the company and has had to learn on the job, in a wayIn regards to the employees, one passed away, one moved into Kroger Pickup and became a lead before his position was terminated and he left for a different store, and another longtime associate retired altogether due to health issues that made it impossible for him to continue workingWe now have a second longtime associate who wants to work in a different department in a different store and another one who is possibly considering going into asset management, as an opening recently popped up for one of those positionsBy the end of the year, one of our longest-serving associates after 30+ years at Kroger is finally going to retireNone of these positions are being replaced by the manager, because in her words, we are fully staffed! As an added note it may well be this manager who is hell bent on causing everyone to leave, but now she is going out of her way to woo back those who want to leave, although she does not realize that she may be part of the problem hereHer pleading reeks of desperationAt the same time, weve had a good run and its been a pleasure to work with the same department people day in and day outEveryone knows their job, executes it well and we all respect and help each otherWith everyone leaving, thinking of leaving or considering a different position, what does one say to the employees to influence them to stick it out? Management comes and goes and Ive been dealing with retail myself for more than 30 yearsIt used to be hat the old-timers stuck around for many years and got out at the right time when they were ready to retireThe younger ones are now starting to become disillusioned and want a changeAnd the timing couldnt be more worse, especially during vacation season when we cant afford to lose any more people than necessaryIn any case, are any of your own stores suffering from attrition, loss, people getting fired or people retiring? To the ones who want to leave, what do you tell them to get them to stay? Usually, Im pretty persuasive and Ive encouraged them to stick it out awhile and keep slugging away, but I dont know how much longer I can do that, especially if their mind is made up to make a changeAnd I dont know how much longer I can deal with this staffed-but-not-fully staffed situationI have a feeling that if the next three leave, they wont be replaced, eitherAnd I am NOT doing the work of three more people! Its hard enough just to do my job let alone do it without some helpAnd there are good candidates who could fill some of these positions, but the co-manager says they are not experienced enough, even though the ones considered have also been around a minute and do great in their respective departmentsHeck, we used to pull people in off the street, promote baggers and cashiers into the departments, but no more, since our illustrious manager says we are still fully staffed! So, how have you dealt with the influx of people leaving and have you bent over backwards to convince someone to stay?
Sounds like the bakery department. We have five full time people plus one person who works two 4-hour days. A typical day we have three people scheduled. Some days we only have two: an opener and a closer. So with the exception of a couple hours where the schedules overlap, each person is in the department by themselves for most of their shift. Of course the most important thing is that we do our Fresh Start and all our scans.
Our Deli dept has a huge problem. When I was hired, we had 12 people working-in fact we were overstaffed and some transferred to other depts. Now we are down to 2 or 3 and many nights our Deli has to close early
