We got a memo this afternoon about someone in central Georgia that passed a total of 125 fake Newport cigarette coupons. The notice had a picture of the license plate and apparently this same individual has been pulling this scam at various grocery stores in the middle and southern areas of Georgia for the past year. The notice said he has not hit the Atlanta Regional area-yet. The cashier took125 coupons and I estimate the value of the cigs was close to $1000. I told my FES that this had to have been a new hire. I don't smoke but even *I* know there is no such thing as a coupon with that value. I have seen from time to time MAILED Newport coupons for $3.00 off and our Marlboro promotion is $2.30 off a pack plus an additional 50 cents off a pack of any style Marlboro. Or the person who took the coupons knew the perp as the note said this appears to be an "organized theft ring."
Could very well be a new hire. But when I was a new hire and some scam like this internal bells and whistles starting going off like crazy and I got management assistance.
Thr customer actually said "really?" Snd I responded with "yep. Really." If they want thr items as much as they say they do, then they'll WANT to wait. Ig not, then they do NOT need the product.
I'm NOT going to loose my job just because you say its ok. I'm NOT sorry, but my job is WAY more important than your sus coupons.
I cashiered for 12 years and 8 with this company. Even I could tell that was a red flag in two seconds reading the title to your post. You need to be aware that most coupons for cigarettes are probably going to be more so "$0.50 off two packs." Nothing insanely large and it's super rare we get coupons for tobacco or liquor products.

I did take a $3 off coupon for one pack of Marlboro (any style)-but it was legit-my mom used to get the Marlboro coupons in the mail

We usually get memos when fake coupons are involved (for any product, not just smokes.) But why is it that it seems Newport is always involved in these scams. No one scamming for Montego or Pall Mall (LOL.)

These are nothing new. If it isn't $0.50 or less than a dollar these coupons are always fake. Most I've seen is maybe a $2 coupon but those are super rare. I cashiered long enough to sniff out scams quickly. You begin to see what's normal and what's not. What immediately stands out as a red flag too. An $8.00 coupon would be an immediate red flag to me and I'd make the manager handle that transaction.
