I heard from a friend of mine at another store that a co-manager offered this person money out of his own pocket if this person would be "management" relief so he wouldn't have to close and she would not claim short-rest.
There has to be something really wrong with this, but is their an official rule?
is this other person a member of store management at a store? or is it just a regular employee? If it's the latter, I almost certainly agree that the co-manager is breaking a rule somewhere.

Do I keep my mouth shut or what?
Would depend on the circumstances. Would guess that some rule was broken and shows poor judgement on the managers part . Now I have seen very rare times ( over 20 years) where there would not be an opening manager , until 10 or so and the Store Director would have his most trusted and senior department head take care of the store business until they got there. Have seen a few times where a Co had to leave on an emergency and they had a Department head or trusted senior employee cover everything until a grocery or associate manager could get in. But never seen manager pay or bribe another employee to cover the store so they could go home. Heard of it happening once but never seen it. What I heard was a co paying an employee to cover the store for a few hours until the grocery manager came in. Co paid the money and left. Employee was to stay an extra hour or so and left just after the co left. No management and the store got hit hard for theft with no management on duty. Entire management staff was disciplined but the one doing the bribing was terminated.
Best guess as to what to do in confront the Co and the Store director and leave it like that for now. I would like to see what would happen when just any employee is paid to be in charge and come back to the market and confronts me or another member of my crew and starts ordering us around. Would not take much to have a union agent there and someone`s ass on the line.
