So I'm curious if all baggers get no seniority everywhere. In the Southwest division baggers get ZERO seniority. My friend who has been a bagger for about 6 years is still making minimum wage.
I know they aren't on the same pay scale as other employees, but I thought they still had seniority/occasional raises. I'll have to ask tonight when I get to work.
Man that's pretty lame. All baggers here start out at 7.25 and get a raise to 7.35 after they are promoted to a general clerk. If they stay on the front end they get a 15 cent raise every 9 months.
If one has been a bagger for that long, never raising to any lever beyng the basic entry level positin, then they probably do not deserve more that thbasic entry level.
check ones contract and job desription(s) and ee what they are doing. ifusd in other deparments oher that package clerk, then you may have acase to wor with to get out of that clasification
At ours baggers make minimum wage and no seniority regardless of length of employment. Our sanitation guy broke his hip and could barely walk he's old so they told him if he couldn't do sanitation he would drop from $15 or whatever his red circle pay is to 7.25

that just doesn't even sound right.

Courtesy clerks have no seniority or get raises at our Kroger which is bull**** because its the hardest and least respected position at the store.
As a courtesy clerk, I can hardly say it is the hardest job in the store. The physical and mental demands are lower than what is demanded in most of the other departments in my store. Then again, 700 has union job limitations on what work these low payed persons will do. So if told to go do the work of a regular clerk, it can be pointed out that it would be a "violation of contract."
That said, as part of 700 our courtesy clerks get some form of seniority. I think they get to keep the seniority should they move to another department, but the "payscale" caps at 10-20 cents above minimum, unless of course you are the special subposition "daytime utility clerk" who gets a little more money.

Lets see courtesy clerks take crap from everyone and I mean everyone from customers to managers and are expected to do every little degrading job like clean up **** literally **** to some welfare reject letting their kid piss in the floor. As far as physical I have worked in about every department and nothing is much harder than pushing carts in a half foot of snow or pouring rain. No wonder they all work a few weeks and quit..

The baggers don't deserve pay raises. They are some of the laziest kids/adults that I've ever seen. In my opinion, only people who work in a department should get raises. The cashiers and office people deserve raises...well most.

Excuse you, I'm a bagger and I work harder than anyone else on front end. I'm friendly and I treat all customers with respect. I find it uppity that you think that bagger don't deserve a raise.

They DESERVE raises. Who cleans checker/department messes. NOT them... Who does carry outs? Who puts away THEIR product? Us. Because department workers are lazy at times. Afraid to clean THEIR OWN mess and put away THEIR OWN product. Poor lazy babies
First of all, laziness can exist in any department. Some employees are better at getting away with it than others and some department heads are better at ensuring everyone carries their fair share than others. Simply because someone may see one or two baggers taking it as easy as possible doesn't mean there aren't other baggers working as hard as they can at their jobs. Let's not label all people that perform a particular job as being something based on how some behave. That's not fair.
Second of all, how the union and Kroger treat the Courtesy Clerk / Bagger classification in some divisions is wrong. There is no reason if a person chooses to remain in that position and does well at it that he or she should be treated differently from other employees and not be eligible for a raise or seniority status. Kroger as a company says the job of a Courtesy Clerk / Bagger is an important one because often times, it's the Courtesy Clerk / Bagger that is the very first and very last employee a customer sees when coming to Kroger, and positive first / final impressions is a key part of the Customer 1st strategy, so the Courtesy Clerk / Bagger position is crucial in that regard. Additionally, it is the Courtesy Clerk / Bagger that, potentially, services the customer the most due to the degree of contact that person makes with that customer while out in the parking lot, while doing go-backs, while bagging groceries and doing carry outs. It's the Courtesy Clerk / Bagger that goes and gets the item(s) the customer forgot during the check out process and does the price checks for the checkers, does the propane exchanges for the customers and handles the loading of heavy items into customers' vehicles such as Christmas trees and grills. It's the Courtesy Clerk / Bagger that has to go outside in extreme heat and cold and intense weather conditions to ensure customers have carts to shop with.
With all that in mind... is someone seriously going to try and argue that a hard-working Courtesy Clerk / Bagger is not deserving of any raise, period, when the Courtesy Clerk / Bagger is one of the most customer-service oriented positions at Kroger, a company that is supposedly all about putting the customer first and wants 80% of customers to be highly satisfied?
kroger won't have "baggers" for much longer they will switch to the carousel type bagging done by the cashiers like at wal mart.
They do that and they might as well as tear up and throw out those "faster check-out at Kroger" signs they have. A fast, efficient checker and a fast, efficient bagger will get the customer through the check-out lane faster than any store that simply has one checker doing both the checking and the bagging. They might as well also stop marketing the "Customer 1st" lie because it's the Courtesy Clerks / Baggers that provide customers with lots of service.
Kroger checkers aren't like ALDI checkers. The speed and efficiency just isn't there for Kroger to maintain the "faster check-out at Kroger" claim that the company loves so much if you take away the Courtesy Clerks / Baggers. ALDI pays their employees a decent enough amount of money to expect and demand lighting quick speed, efficiency and accuracy. Kroger does not.
ALDI does not have departments and expects all employees to stock everything. They have very few employees and the very little people they have do everything in the store. The cashiers there just throw your groceries in a cart for you to bag. I'm sure kroger will fiqure out a way to keep the faster checking out while still getting rid of baggers. I mean its kroger they always think of ways to eliminate jobs.
It's true that the cashiers at ALDI don't bag groceries. It's also true though that the cashiers at ALDI can check a whole lot faster than any checker I've ever seen at a Kroger store. What I was getting at with that comparison is if you take Courtesy Clerks / Baggers out of the store, there is no way Kroger is going to be able to stick to the claim that they have the fastest check-out in town. It will slow the check-out process down dramatically when people show up with a cart full of groceries. The company's precious Que-Vision scores and 1 + 1 compliance standard will plummet through the floor. If Kroger checkers could check as fast as the ALDI cashiers, then maybe, just maybe, they could get away with doing away with Courtesy Clerks / Baggers because even big orders would be scanned with extreme speed and if that same scanning speed could be applied to bagging, then just maybe the check-out process wouldn't see a huge efficiency drop, but that's a lot to put on a checker and for what Kroger pays, you would see an even more extreme turn-over rate.
It's next to impossible to remain in compliance with Que-Vision, continue to practice 1 + 1 and promote a faster check-out at Kroger vs. the local competition if you take Courtesy Clerks / Baggers out of the picture unless the company is willing have twice the number of registers open at all times and installs an additional four to six self-check out lines in stores. While additional self-check out lines might be practical and the route the company heads down at some point, additional checkers won't happen just as checkers making $10.00 starting pay like at ALDI won't happen either. The elimination of the Courtesy Clerk / Bagger position would not only add to the workload for the existing employees (no one to bag, no one to do go-backs, no one to get things for customers, no one to do carts unless you do what Walmart/Target does) and thus make Kroger an even more unpleasant, frustrating place to work (even higher turnover rate) but I also believe it would agitate and alienate customers because they would clearly and rightfully claim that Kroger is going cheap on them and slashing service that they expect.
courtesy clerk coded as such do not. Baggers that are coded as cashiers do. If you are coded a CC and run register you're getting screwed.
Actually, if you're coded as a CC, you're not supposed to be running a register at all. That's according to the union. If you're coded as a CC, the only duties you're supposed to perform is the duties of a CC (bag, clean up spills, get carts, do carryouts, etc.).
The baggers don't deserve pay raises. They are some of the laziest kids/adults that I've ever seen. In my opinion, only people who work in a department should get raises. The cashiers and office people deserve raises...well most.

I agree. Courtesy clerks DESERVE a raise. They MUST put up with everyone's crap. And if they don't... Heaven help them.., but anyways if the cc's are "so lazy" then why don't YOU clean up YOUR OWN DAMNED mess rather than wait for a cc to clean YOUR mess for you... Talk about lazy.., smh...
I'm a bagger in Arkansas. This is a long story but you'll probably like it....especially you senior management types....you may even recognize some of the stunts you are trained to pull in Kroger Management 101. Started at Kroger as a produce clerk after only 8 months produce experience at WalMart. Starting hourly was $8.25. No previous grocery experience except at my grandparents family grocery while in grade school many, many years ago. Got regular raises like clockwork. By the time the following incident occurred I was up to $11.85 per hour. So, a little over a year ago the zone mgr. visited the store. He asked me if I would have the green rack full by the deadline in an hour. I told him the truth...big mistake! Told him I didn't think I would make the deadline. He wanted to know what was the problem. I told him....the truth....2nd big mistake. After the 3rd or 4th time of him asking me what was the problem, and I trying to explain, I finally caught on that he wasn't interested in the truth...only in his expectations, reasonable or not. Finally I told him that yes, there seemed to be a problem, I guess I didn't know what it was nor did I know how to fix it. Shoulda seen the look on the co-mgr's face. It was classic!!! Anyway, 2 days later Mr.Zonie sent in his toady, lackey boy assistant to inspect the dept. again. (he reminds me of Beaker, the Professor's asst. from the Muppet show). At 10 minutes to deadline I still had 4 holes on the green rack to fill....all of these 4 items were on the regulation produce cart sitting right there in front of the holes, along with 8 other items thus making up the required 12 items per load (not 11 items, no, not 13 items...just 12). But of course Beaker failed to notice this and reported to Mr. Zonie that I had screwed up again. Next morning the store mgr. inspected the dept. soon as she walked in & complimented me on the condition of the green rack and how surprised & pleased she was to see everything full & fresh 45 minutes before deadline. I responded that yes, no doubt she was surprised because I was certain that she had received several "rocket" emails from Mr. Zonie about my perceived lack of performance. She admitted to that. Anyway, I almost finished out my shift when Ms. Mgr. called me to the office & informed me that, by order of Mr. Zonie, I was being transferred to the...oh noooo...front end as a bagger. In our store being made a bagger like this is tantamount to a death sentence designed to get employees to quit so Kroger won't have to fire them. That's one of the first tricks manager trainees are taught at Kroger U. I of course pointed out that doing so would really screw up the budget in the front end dept. as I would now be her highest paid bagger ($11.85/hr.) and I would have immediate seniority over all the other baggers & most of the checkers too. Yes, she realized that & it didn't make her happy. I told her that if she had any balls she would have tried to stick up for me and make a case for keeping me in produce. She admitted that she had no balls and had not attempted to reason with Mr. Zonie....who is a totally unreasonable, arrogant bully. So I guess I can't really blame her too much. Anyway, the next morning I showed up to be a bagger, all pissed off. Only took about an hour before I realized that Mr. Zonie had done me a big favor. I realized that now I had no deadlines, no BOH crap, no ordering with the right color pens, no worries about pushing the right buttons on the hand held gun thing, if the truck didn't show up on time or at all....so what! Not my problem. I show up, bag, push carts, sweep up every one else's mess, and all that other stuff that baggers complain about. But hey....good job security....how many employees beg to become baggers? No one wants my job, I work part-time and get the hours & days I want almost every week. If they start screwing around with my schedule I'll just start pulling seniority & bump someone if I have too. I'm a senior citizen so I could play the age card if necessary, and I'm a union steward...which makes it just a tad more difficult for management to screw me around. They know I'm not afraid of them. I'm at $12.10/hr now & soon will be up to $12.35/hr....not bad for a part-time bagger in bass akward Arkansas. I get regular positive remarks on the customer surveys....3 separate mentions just the other day...$12 worth of Fresh & Friendly bucks...not too shaggy. So, I've got Kroger right where I want them and they helped get me there! Thanks Kroger!!!

haha haha so funny bagger pays like crap for a reason it's too weed out people anyone that is good either gets promoted within months nnever would see anyone bag for more than a year. At least that's how it used to be. If bagging is hard or a lot of work you def shouldn't be promoted. Its sad how things have changed they have to hire people off the streets for departments because there is no one up front worth a damn.
Anyone could put a product in a bag and place it in their cart. Soon there will be no such thing as "baggers" because big companies such as Kroger and Publix will realize that customers can bag by theirselve which is sad but true
