Contact your store union steward, he or she should be able to provide the union handbook you are looking for. Do note that that handbook will be a condensed version of the full contract and possibly omit some parts of the agreement.
The employee handbook would come from your management.
There is no single union book, each area has its own contract, and therefore each area has a diffrent set of rules. Although they tend to be similar in the broad strokes, details will differ.

on krogertalk.com I have a place ( under union talk) where the officail employee handbook , for the swkma is posted. Also have a copy of the ufcw constittion on there along withlocal 1000 and local 540 contracts. There is also a copyof local1059 contract that some on posted on there also.
I worked for krogers for almost 2 years in the front end department as part-time. About a year ago I told my department manager that I was looking in a career involving emergency services such as being a medic or firefighter. A few months ago I got accepted by a fire department as voluntarily to pick up knowledge, skills, and experience.
I told my manager about this and told her I will need to limit my availability only for a short time while I'm in the fire academy getting my certification and that I plan on staying with being employed with kroger since I won't be getting paid by the fire department because it's a voluntarily position for me to get the skills and experience for a couple years. That being said I changed my availability and my manager didn't seem to have any problems with it or at least she didn't say anything about it.
Then a couple months later they decided to terminate me for my limited availability, without warning, no phone call no nothing, I had to ask why I'm not listed on the schedule anymore to find out I was terminated. Such an awful way to terminate someone going to the fire academy to become a firefighter especially since I told my manager that I was not planning on quiting. ... thats like terminating someone because they went to Basic training for the military.
I think everything that happened to you in that regard completely sucks gorilla balls. ESPECIALLY given your desire to work civil service.....I sincerely wish you God Speed with your goals!
Right, I made it clear to them with my plans and they didnt seem to have a problem with it, but decide to terminate me anyway, I didnt see this coming I wasnt prepared and now I'm struggling, trying to find a paid job while unemployed and doing community work for free. They could atleast be nice and tell me before hand that they couldnt have me with limited availability that way I could of started looking for an employer that appreciates my goals. Funny thing is that every year on 9/11 this store does an event for giving back to the firefighters of the local community, obviously they dont care about people who put their lives on the line and only do it for publicity to get customers.
Check with your school for possible job leads, as well as local hospitals. If need be, become a C.N.A. for the income while you complete your schooling. There IS a place for you while you're doing this, just make it happen.
i would also like to know the rules and what not, because ive been working at kroger for almost 2 years now i know its not long and all but all of the new people seem to get more say than i do and i just dont feel as if i am being treated right. my managers treat me like crap...yesterday me and one other employee were pushing carts for about two hours at rush hour and we had the lot cleared all day, then they told us we werent working? make me bag for the last four hours because i " wasnt working" doesnt seem right if you ask me...something like this happens every time i work...90% of our managers are women...one guy...the girls favor girls and guys" like me" get yelled at for nothing. i would like to know what i can do to put a stop to this!!!
Definitely could use that handbook. I'm non-union, but I'm sure it applies. Time to get back at the company. They dastardley do not give us the handbook because they breach even that modest document. Please give me it. I will return it when done, after I make a copy.
I think a union hand book should be handed out the same time we sign up for the unoin.it would allow us to see all that the union has accomplished for us. And the Stewart should be encouraging us to get more involved. I feel that the union needs to be stronger and it can not get there without backing and knowledge.
