Store Manager fired!

My store manager just got fired this week!  He was around 50 years old and worked at Kroger all his life started out as a bag boy and worked his way up.  I think that it was just wrong for Kroger to fire him like that without warning, I thought that he was a good manager, and nice guy.   When I mentioned it to some of the other employees about him getting fired they would bust out laughing.no

Why did he get fired?

Nice guys don't last in the management world.  Corporate wants results.  Not stagnant managers.

Sadly it happens that way. Kroger makes up a bogus reason to fire decent managers to save money needed for corporates UNNECESSARY bonuses. Also they have a knack for seemingly firing someone who is decent to their employees. Like mentioned before Kroger wants results. And even if theanager gets results required. The company, they STILL manage to fire them.

Who was it?  In my 20 years at Kroger, I've lost track of how many managers that have come and gone.

Had this happen to a good friend. Our Market Manager didn't fire him, but made it clear that if he didn't step down she was going to make his life living hell. I practically BEGGED him to fight for what was rightfully his, but he ended up going to another store as a dept. lead.

And yes, he was truly one of the nicest guys you could ever hope to meet. Sad.

He should have fought. But I also understand from his viewpoint. If he chose to fight and he won, then your Market Manager could and most likely would find a way to make his life a living hell without it looking like retaliation. I've seen it happen before. And without proof then nothing would or could be done.

Why did she want to make his life a living hell? Did he show his co workers/subordinates respect and decency?

Some people are just a$$holes.  That's why.   It may not happen when you want it to, but I think people like that eventually get what's coming to them in the grand scheme of things.

He was the exact, text-book model of a decent, compassionate human being. In his nine years as a salaried manager, I don't think he ever wrote anybody up. He had absolutely no enemies; only friends.

And as for corporate wanting 'results', while that is true, this guy more than made his sales. What happened is he was set up in a no-win situation where he was guaranteed to make a mistake. It was a bull sh!t technicality, and the MM nailed him on it. He had never once been in trouble before.

That sucks. And if he wasn't union, then there's not much you can really do. However it shows he is the bigger person by walking away from it. It's hard to walk away at times but sometimes it's for the best.

And in the end, respect and decency will be the only things that matter! This world didn't get as far as it has, purely on disrespect alone. Despite what ANY company out there thinks! I've heard it said that karma is a b****. Well, it can be so in many, myriad ways. So him leaving with his head held high (and not burning any bridges) is only going to benefit him in any future endeavors. And he can look himself in the mirror every morning without regrets.

Just a side note...I used to work for another manager at another chain who was probably the most rigid stick-in-the-mud, blue-suited everyday, stand around and watch, fire off orders, cold, sterile, impersonal man you'd ever want to meet. Guess what? The guy had a serious illness, which forced him to take time off. He eventually got better, but it lead to his eventual retirement. Well, after his health improved, he got himself a boat. And get this! I would see the same guy at a store I worked at 5 years later. Walks in wearing a Hawaiian shirt. Nicest, friendliest guy you'd ever want to meet. The guy that wouldn't say two words to me while he was the boss is now talking my ear off, and is a real decent guy! Yes, DECENT, FRIENDLY GUY! I think the stress of the job finally got to him and it affected his health so much, that he had to change his life and do an about face. Sooo...moral is...You can't judge a book by it's cover alone...And sometimes, retirement is not always a bad thing. And the company...well, who cares? THEY'RE NOT IN BUSINESS ANYMORE!!! And he's happier now than he's ever been!!! And I say...MORE POWER TO HIM! In his case, nice guys don't always finish last...

We have an awesome co-manager who has many years of retail experience.  We all think he'd be an amazing store manager but he knows the Market people don't like him so he doesn't set himself up for that failure.

Some stores cater to ethinicty because it is their customer base.  I visited on store and it had an actual sushi chef preparing food in the store.  Same place had an open produce sales area.  It was like a farmers market connected to the front of the store.  It created a pleasing atmosphere.

He wasn't alone. I heard it was 25 store managers and asst. managers. My store (Tylersville Rd. West Chester, #945) lost our store manager on Tuesday as well ! it is a big shake up; our asst. managers were spared. I found this thread looking for information on what is going on.
