I recently got hired at Kroger, I am wondering what to expect during training starting off as a courtesy clerk?? How soon after training can I work? Is there a limited number of hours I can get since I'm new? (I'm aiming for 35-40 hrs if possible)

You'll answer a lot of questions on the computer not relevant to your job and you'll get like 16 hours.

Everyone on the front end gets very few hours except for the customer service managers and the front end lead. If you don't want to be those, then switch departments asap. Produce and grocery can get you 30 hours. Night crew can get you full time easily, but be prepared for some health issues.

my manager actually was really excited about me being open at night and told me people can get promoted from courtesy clerk in a week if they do well. So hello serious health issues. It beats going to class and just going home right after everyday though.>_< thanks for all of your help, I couldn't google this and get and answer.

You won't get over 27 hours because of obamacare.

That's fine too! I actually realized my schedule is suited well, since I have classes to go to. I was afraid my manager would be upset that I wrote down more hours (& then later requested not to have so many) but he was ok with it & gave me great hours, so hello Kroger family! smile

I started out as a Coursty Clerk. I'm now an Assistant Market Manager. Don't chat with coworkers, focus on the customer, and don't stand around. Always keep busy and get carts. Do this and management will take an interest in you.

Management will get interested in you if you do these simple things:

1. Show up on time and leave ON TIME. Yes it may be a minimum wage job, but being punctual goes a long way on the front end.

2. Like the other guy said, don't talk to the baggers or cashiers; talk to the customers.

3. Always do the crap work if you're told. Taking out trash, doing reshop, cart duty, etc.

If you do this boring stuff well, the managers will probably trust you more since you actually care about the company. Seniority does not apply to baggers, only regular clerks (cashiers, stockers, etc) so it's a talent contest.

#1 isn't always right. If its really busy and they're getting hit hard. Ask a manager if they want you to leave or stay a bit longer. This is a huge plus in getting more hours.
