New hire, courtesy clerk, training question, question about HR,management

So here is the deal. I was called in and interviewed with this woman, we will call her "Beverly" (not her real name, of course).

From "Beverly's" interview I then came in for a drug test given by "Carol" (not her real name)  for the saliva test. Took three days to get the results and background check. Passed both.

Came in last week and spend 5 1/2 hours staring at a computer screen undergoing "training" for those videos. The bagging, workplace violence, personal hygiene, etc.

So, anyway... when I spoke with "Beverly" for my initial interview I told her that I would be available any days at almost any hours except for this week Thursday-Saturday. This was something that I was involved with and pre-arranged a few months in advance. There is no way that I can get out of it. I told "Beverly" that these days would be unavailable during our interview. I reminded "Carol" about it before I left after the saliva test and she asked me if "Beverly" knew and I told her yes, she did know.

"Beverly" called me yesterday to tell me training was this Friday. One of the blackout days. I called her today after trying multiple times to get her on the phone. She sounded frustrated and disappointed with me, but asked if I could still come in for orientation on Sunday. I told her yes, I would be there for orientation. When I spoke to her today about the scheduling conflict she basically said that I wouldn't work this next week because I had to undergo the training on the floor with a current employee first. Which I am okay with doing the training on the floor, it was just that I couldn't make it this Friday.

Not to keep rambling, but here is my issue. After reading some of the posts on this forum I am concerned about the possibility of being let go for not being able to make the training schedule that "Beverly" has set. But I TOLD HER AT THE INTERVIEW when she asked when I could start and what days I would be available. I even SAW HER WRITE SOMETHING DOWN. If I am let go, will I have any case?

I don't think I will be let go, I think she was just pissed off because now she has to re-arrange next week's schedule. She thought I would be trained this Friday and orientation on Sunday and then on the floor a day or so later. Now that isn't going to happen.

I am just concerned that a communication issue would be the cause of a potential termination. As low as these odds are, if it happens, can HR help me out at all?

How old are you?  I must compliment your grammer and punctuation if you are a teenager.  You write very well.

You are over thinking this.  This is how kroger rolls.  You mention important dates that you are unable to work and it goes in one ear and out the other of the people in charge of you.  Don't worry about it.  This is normal.

Go in on Sunday for orientation.  Wait to be put on the schedule.  It might not be very many hours so be prepared.

As for training with another employee, you will be paid for it.

Definitely go for higher education if you are a teenager and able to.  Don't let small things like this bug you.

I do not think HR would want to get involved with something like this.  Either Beverly sees the potential asset you are to kroger or she doesn't.  If not, go find another job but always make school a priority.

I am older than a teenager but still look young. Thank you for the compliment on my writing style, though. It went far :)

This is a job where I know that I can find "better" out there, but due to my personal circumstances and the economic circumstances of the area, our state and our nation, this is a job that will help pay the bills, better myself and family, buy groceries, eat at restaurants, etc. Maybe after I have been there long enough and gotten more information and settled in the job will feel like more than "just a paycheck" but that's basically what it is for now. After all $7.25 an hour at if I am lucky 20 - 25 hours a week will not go very far in the end. But I didn't accept the job just as a paycheck, I accepted it as someone with a strong work ethic and an ability to take direction and not grumble about it so that is where I stand now.

I am going to orientation on Sunday, I will probably be a bit tired after this week but will be there for orientation. I think that this woman was just frustrated due to the fact that now she has to rearrange the schedule. But it is Wednesday and she didn't want me in for training until Friday plus as I have now found out, "our" week starts on a Sunday. So not only have I given her at least 48 hours notice in advance but I had told her this same information at my interview -- which was less than ten days ago.

I am feeling in agreement with you that nothing is to worry about, but I desperately need a paycheck coming in right now, and don't want to have to deal with a hassle that shouldn't be there, especially for so small of an issue as scheduling and communication. It's not like I am calling her on Friday morning telling her I can't come in at the last minute. But the down side is I might not see a paycheck now until the end of the month. Does Kroger pay bi-weekly?

Here, payday is once a week.  Direct deposit is Thursday morning.  Paper check(if they still do that) is Friday.

If I work Sunday thru Saturday, I get paid on the next Thursday for that week.

You should get paid for orientation and the video training.

It takes a long time to move up the pay scale.  Move up or into another department asap.  Not sure if you are interested in being a cashier or working in Deli or Produce.

Grocery department is physically demanding but I like it.

Thanks for your response. I have a wells fargo account so I can do the Direct Deposit deal if I end up having to fill out paperwork for it.

What's this I am reading online about unions though? I've never been in one, can I expect to see part of my paycheck go for that? It can be rough enough with a single deduction declared (myself) and watch the federal, state and social security bite out of what I make. Which won't be much if I only get about 10-15 hours to start per week.

Union initiation fee (listed on your paycheck as UNION ARREARS) is $5 a week until roughly $180 in my area. In addition to that, $10.44 a week (regardless of hours worked) for union dues (listed as UNION DUES 1) on your paycheck at the same time... for as long as you work there.

Thats highway robbery for a bagger.  I thought it was less for them?  OP, wait until your through probation period to join up.

You can't do that in every state. I had union dues taken out of my paycheck from week 1.

Orientation is tomorrow from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.

How long does a probation period last?

I still have to have training because of the fact that I called and had to have her reschedule. I guess I will find out when I officially do training tomorrow.

I got the impression I'll be shadowing a current bagger - stocker - cart gatherer ("Courtesy Clerk") for about five to seven hours for at least one day as part of training.

I'm pretty sure Courtesy Clerks are NOT allowed to stock shelves actually.

I don't have a problem with not stocking shelves :)
