Pay deductions?

Ok, so I was watering the plants outside the store when I apparently didn't close one of the valves tight enough. It wasn't intentional since I made sure the other valve I used was sealed tight (and was).

My manager started saying "you owe me water" from the time he asked me to shut it to the time when I returned him the key.

Fortunately, it was the end of my shift so I left after that.

Can they really deduct pay from me for water, or penalize me for anything like that?

f so, then they'd might as well penalize everyone who leaves the sink faucets running longer than they needed to. no

If you didn't intentionally do it then it was an accident. Worst they can do is make a verbal threat, like he did, to scare you.

Offer to "buy" a gallon store brand water. j/k

Seriously, they CANNOT do a pay deduction. Being as it was an accident. Nobody is perfect, and I'm willing to bet your manager isn't either.

Do they deduct pay every time someone drops an item off a shelf or something? No. So they can't try anything. If they did they'd be in a lot of trouble.

Not a chance. It sounds like your manager was trying to hold your attention - not to do that again.
