It happens, sometimes right in front of you. But what do you do? Should you do something? Should you say something? Sometimes when it happens its so fast you don't even realize it until they have left. And then their are the ones who come everyday and try to find a new thing to steal. You know them, you have memorized their faces, you'd recognize their voice from far away. Yes thats a bit much, but they have become the worst part of your day. They are bullies in your mind commig to purposly ruin your day because they can. I've never had this problem until now, and frankly I just couldnt believe it. That some people have the gall to behave like this. And to do it right in front of me and get off scott free. No amount of confrontation and being caught will deter them and that frightens me, it sickens me. Don't even get me started on how they use their young and impressionable children to help in their unlawful deeds. But what really gets my goat is the fact that they act like your friend, just because at first gave them the benefit of the doubt.
When a customers purse is stolen while at Kroger, she no doubt will inform and employee. Most likely she will tell the first person she sees, the cart attendant. He is a young man, well built and fit. He of course goes running after the thief, causing a short yet non violent confrontation and the cart attendant reigns victor. He is her hero. Unfortunately the store manager does not see it this way and the young man is scolded, written up and placed on probation. Why? Why is the world we live in today so full of damn injustice?
Legally speaking you may use any and all force to restrain a shoplifter until the arrival of the police.
However, you never should attempt to stop a shoplifter. Kroger is liable for the lives of its employees and fighting shoplifters has gotten employees killed, resulting in large settlements against employers. Because cost of paying for your death > cost of theft company policy is to ignore shoplifters or customer service them until they leave (this is actually fairly effective, especially with alcohol thieves).
If you see someone who shoplifts regularly call security or management. Beer runs? Hard to stop and not worth it-they'll get theirs when the cops bust their party. We have had a ton of shrink lately from a failure to rotate. Concentrate on stuff like that.

Only employees trained to apprehend can apprehend. Unless you're loss prevention or management you can only make the thief or would be thief uncomfortable and report them to management. We've had some successes and then we've had management that just didn't care.

I work for Kroger. As a courtesy clerk. Death does not bother me because I have already died inside.
My store has alot of shoplifters and im always watching for them. When I see someone shoplifting or suspect them of shoplifting I report it to a member of management. We have a co-manager that has caught many people this year.

The ones around here really like to make a big fuss and a scene when they are caught. It's funny as hell when your manager says "I think we can do without your kind of business."

when I started kroger, I was often used as security, and stopping shoplifters.
but eventually,it got where we were told to do nothing, but page management.
after, oh a half hour or so, management would page you back, to see what you wanted, way to late for anything.
once, our management team, all 3 of them, tried to wrestle a big guy down in the parking lot. sad sight, he was actually WALKING with them hanging on like ticks.
I went out, chicken winged him to the ground, and got a "GET BACK IN THE STORE"form ungratefull, bruised management.
threatened to write me up.
never bothered to even acknowledge a shoplifter again.
