I've only closed once before, but next week I'm closing 3 out of the 4 days I work. I just made sure the lot was clear, but is that it for the most part? Thanks in advance.

As a courtesy clerk I am basically the production assistant of Kroger. One of the lowest grunts on the chain. I work in what is called Front End, although Rear End might be better since that is the feeling you get a lot of the times you are working.
My "job" is go-backs, price checks, bagging, take-out assistance, answering customer questions and oh yea -- that dreaded goddamned parking lot.
yeah basically just closing lot. if you get done with that in time and the checker doesnt really need a bagger you can do go-backs. i usually clean a little too cause i get bored
Our courtesy clerks used to make sure each register had bags, garbage emptied under the register, catalina and register tape stocked. Now all they do is carts and go backs.
In general, your job is to do whatever anyone tells you. As a courtesy clerk, you're at the bottom of the food chain, so practically every employee is your de-facto manager. And also the customers. And, no matter how much you do, you will never get it all done, and someone will be pissed off. Eventually, this constant pressure will either drive you clinically insane, compel you to quit, or be an inspiration for you to move to a department or get a higher position where, eventually, you can pay it forward to the next guy, thus completing the great circle of life.
We don't have utility clerks here, so the CCs do everything. By the time the last CC punches out the following should be done here (which obviously does not always happen):
1. Lot duty
2. Making sure ALL front end garbages empty
3. Making sure bottle room clean
4. Bathroom inspections
5. Sweeps
6. Making sure ALL checkstands in lobby have what they need
7. Go-backs
All this AND MORE, while helping customers and stopping whatever your doing to bag.
The cc's SHOULD get DECENT raise due to all the crap try have to deal with.
Bottle room is where recycling of empty bottles go. The customer puts their empty soda bottles into the machine and it prints out a voucher. That room is SUPPOSED to be kept clean. But often it's an ooey, gooey, gloppy, sloppy mess. I've had to clean out the machines and clean the bins. How it why customers CANNOT (WILL NOT) read SIMPLE instructions on what to do is beyond me. There are even pictures On how to do it. I HATE bottle room duty.

Holy hell you guys are much more eco-friendly and advanced than we are.
All we have is a container in the lobby for recycling plastic bags.
Any of the plastic we use as employees -- or any recyclable for that matter, including aluminum cans -- just gets thrown away.
I have two locker full of recyclable items that I keep telling myself on one of my days off I am going to go in with a trash bag and empty them out and take them to the nearest recycling container.
Basically, our recycling plan doesn't exist. Or if it does, it sucks. We do bailing, of course, and sometimes I sneak a plastic water bottle into the plastic bags only container. But that's it.
It is state specific. When anyone buys pop or beer in our state, they are charged .010 each. When empty, they bring them to our bottle room to get their .010 ea. back.
Hi, this is an old forum but I wanted to see if anybody else hated closing as much as I do.
At my store, we are told to start closing 4 hours before our shift is over, easy enough right? One CC is supposed to
-Face dairy, such as eggs, yogurt, etc. There are basically 3 isles to face.
-Face and stock to the back the cold drinks which is a bitch and a half. Get the drinks from the isle, stock them over where they go in the cold.
-Make sure all go backs are done
-Make sure all the carts are in
-Store Sweeps as well
-And for biggest pain in the ass, trash. Bags too weak too hold anything, and because new rules mean the trash compactor has to always be locked, running to find a manager to unlock the damn thing for you.
Being a courtesy clerk in general sucks, but being a closer is even WORSE!
1. Clear the lot
2. Clear off the checkstands of go-backs and debris if needed (ALWAYS needed)
3. Empty checkstand trash if needed
4. Check bathrooms and clean if needed
5. Check lot again
6. Start go-backs or if you are not able, put them in basket(s)
7. make sure checkstands are stocked if needed
8. Check lot a final time depending on what time the store closes or when you leave
Its alot to do yes, and checkers vam and will call you to bag and may get mad if you do not assist them
Our closing courtesy clerks also have to pull drinks off the shelf and fill the Grab & Go coolers. Usually, the SCO attendant makes the list and helps fill the coolers.
I suspect this may be in violation of the contract.
For me as a closing UC (18+ at least and not minor, minors can't do as much as I can which is why I always get a closing shift until 8pm and then the minors finish til 10)
-paper and plastic refill, although usually I do just plastic and another UC will do paper as it's an easier traide and frees me up for store help if management needs it or front end. -bathroom checks, I do try to do to make sure supplies are filled and do a general inspection or quick clean. Otherwise if I am there until 11, I will sometimes do a deep clean if able to. -Carts obviously and shopbacks if able. -trash throw if management wants as I'm one of four UCs who are able (18+), as well as being able to bail and operate bailer (again 18+ because of laws) as I got trained by my former Night Lead on how to do it. -general store sweep / wherever management wants me to clean quickly if i have down time. Also assisting with facing GM / Liquor / X Dept / or doing store tasks (seasonal assist, dept cleaning, customer assistance, helping out in a dept, mainly assisting management in grocery / dairy / frozen (we can because we are coded as Store / Utility Clerks), etc.
Have also assisted FES during large rush situations and helped move lines along by diverting smaller orders to SCOs and assisting customers in checking out on SCOs or pulling customers to a register I am bagging for if is empty. We did do grab n go filling as well, but that's been moved to the vendor responsibility, so we just face now.
