Question Please.

I have worked at Kroger since I graduated high school in 1993. I have been a bagger alot of this time.  I was asked the other day if I wanted to transfer to another department. Either Produce or Stock Crew. I have helped out both areas more than a few times over the years.  Which area would be better. I live wiith my brother in his basement and pay rent of 200 every month. Does stock crew pay more than produce? It would be stocking shevles from 730 to 330pm. Produce schedulle would be 1030 to 7pm.  I have been saving up for a car for some time now. I have a license but not car so I ride my bike to work.  I want to make the best money I can so I can buy more comic books and Dungeons and Dragons items and save for my future car.  Can someone help me please on here. Thank you David

to my knowledge they don't give a pay raise unless you're doing nights.

but you may have to ask you managers.

i just know i'm making more as a bagger than the guy stocking dairy/produce during the day

Even if you were hired in some 'super awesome contract' from the 19th century, there's no way in hell a bagger makes more than anyone.

Dungeons and Dragons is so passe.
Now it's Farmville 2 and World of Warcraft! (j/k)

If you are serious, from what I have read on here, from what I know personally from my store, I would think produce.
Stock crew deals with the bullcrap of loading the shelves and is set to a tight schedule that would cause even the mentally strongest of people to freak out.

Produce has the same stress, but it's more spread out, and since you tend to be left to your own work for at least one-third of your shift (and generally that's stocking the inventory and making sure any inventory gone bad is removed) it's a little easier to deal with.

If you don't mind customers stopping you ever few minutes, getting called up to bag every so often for Front End because Front End can't schedule worth a damn or hire enough manpower to do their job proper, then I'd go with Produce.

If you have a little bit of muscles (can you lift up to 50 pounds?), don't mind being held to a time clock more than most other departments (with the possible exception of Front End) and can get used to repetition and dealing with all personalities under the sun, go with stock. And if you go with stock be prepared for the possibility of them wanting you to work at night, since stocking rarely happens before 7 p.m. At my store, as a courtesy clerk with Front End I generally do not see pallets in aisles until at least 8 p.m. Now there is stocking going on during the day of course, but it's wine, or bread, things like that.

And Drug / GM stocks almost 24/7 so I can usually find someone stocking shelves with their department too. But the serious stocking, what puts product on the shelf from grocery, takes place at night. Dairy, Drug-GM, Wine, Nutrition usually do theirs during the day and usually with as few people as possible. And if you end up stocking for dairy you're going to have to find some non-slip shoes, a good pair of gloves and maybe a small jacket or coat, preferably fur-lined, because you are going to be spending a lot of time impersonating an eskimo, my friend.

That is different.  You are a cashier?/clerk but get used as a bagger.  Baggers' pay tops out at 50 cents above minimum wage in most places.  And that is it, they are done making raises until they are moved to another department.

What state are you in?

What have you been doing for kroger for the last 21 years besides be a bagger?  Are you on a higher payscale than a bagger?  I hope so.  Because the last few contracts here have sucked for the new hires.   If your store is like ours, then you move as a bagger getting same rates as the new hires.

At my store, both Produce and Grocery clerks are paid the same.  I think produce is laid back.  I know our day grocery is laid back.  BUT, I do not know how your store rolls.

So, I think your decision should be based on which department you get along with better(drama free) and what hours you prefer to work.

I think produce would be less strenuous depending on the department manager.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Hi this is David again. I am going to be working stock crew during the day. I said earlier I have worked both areas before and this one has the best hours. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday. I got the ok to work 4 10 hour shifts. I am looking forward to it also. My pay will increase about 100-125 more per week which is cool.  I start Monday morning stock bread then help out Rusty the dairy manager.
