I work in the bakery and I was closing yesterday. I left, and about a half an hour later I realized I forgot my phone. Since I live 5 minutes away, I decided to go get it. I was still wearing my uniform shirt when I got there and a customer wanted me to slice their bread for them (using the bread slicer). I don't mind writing on a cake while off the clock, and other simple tasks. But could I get in trouble if I used the bread slicer while off the clock?

Yes, you could definitely get in trouble for doing anything work-related off the clock. If you get hurt somehow, and you're off the clock, it's a whole legal mess for Kroger.

Do not work off the clock.
Do not talk about it at work and don't do it again.
It is a liability thing. If you lose a finger, you will not get the medical bills paid by workers comp.
We don't even have workmans comp.
There has to be some kind of insurance for on the job injuries. A large corporation like Kroger has to have something. I thought all businesses were federally mandated to carry some kind of insurance for on the job injuries. Now that women are in the workforce, it is no longer called workmans comp but something else.
Basically, if you lose an arm, you don't get the $3k benefit.

Kroger will pay for the doctor bills etc. But they do not have workmans comp so you will not be paid if you have to take off work for your injury. This is how Kroger is in Texas.
Shoulda said "sorry, I'm closed" and be done with it. If they wanna get pissy about it, then their ass should've came to get their bread sliced earlier.
Next time, kindly say "I'm not at work right now, and I'll get Joe Schmoe to come help you." Done. As long as you're not douchey about it to the customer, you're good.
