I just got hired and worked about 4 days and can't afford to Los my job and my grandpa is in the hospital in bad condition.. Is there a point system for people in probationary period. Will I get fired if I get my first call off in probation...?

No. Most stores use it to scare you. As long as you have a pulse and show up after that situation is behind you, you'll still have a job.  Just make sure you get the all-sacred doctors note to management upon your return.

If this is a truly life or death situation then call your manager and explain.

If he's dying, then of course they'll let you off.  If he's just sick, but expected to get better, you can visit him on your time off.

At my store they get mad, all they want to know is if you can make it in. Calling off here Is so awkward because you have to keep making excuses not to come in, because they will call every hour to check your status

FAMILY FIRST ABOVE NEEDS OF THE BUSINESS!!

store: when can you come un, can you make it in? EVEN though your family member is in the hospital??

me: nope. You'll make do without me. My family member is in hospital

*store calls 5-6 times asKing SAME question. Keeps hounding.

Me: Fine! You wanna know when ill be in today? It's Nonya O clock!! none ya business!!!

i will NOT be in!! Family is in the hos-pit-al!!

store: *bogys empty threats of write ups, suspensions, etc.

point is: your family in the hospital comes FIRST.

I remember correctly, my union contract simply stated that we were required to call in and notify management 2 hours before our shift started if we were unable to work.  Call 2 hours before, talk to manager.  That's it!  Simple.  Didn't say here's a list of excused reasons for missing work. Or you can be X amount of hours late.  Just call 2 hours before.  As usual they will try to threaten you, harass you, make you feel guilty.  Whenever I called in (only twice that I remember) I simply said I'm scheduled X hours to X hours today and I'm sick, I won't be in today.  I will let you know tomorrow if I'm still unable to come in.  Thank you.  Hung up phone.
