A few days ago all the managers and dept. managers were called to a morning huddle in the produce dept. And during this huddle, everyone there was required to shuck a certain amount of corn. We were busy as hell and now they want every one to help the best staffed dept. in the store because the produce manager is such an ass kisser!
When they're done, send them over to the bakery and make them each ice and decorate a certain number of cupcakes and colossal cookies. Your store manager sounds warped.
And then the next day, have them go to the meat department and everyone can cut some top sirolin. The next day they can all go to dairy and sling some milk.

And than the next day they can get on all fours and clean the tiles in the restrooms with their own toothbrushes.
The whole shuck vs don't shuck corn--thing drives me crazy, EVERY year. It always comes down to the individual store manager's wants. I just dump the stuff in the bins and let the customer do the rest.
As for all the posts about management working different areas? GREAT idea! They all need practice with every aspect of their stores.
The morning huddles sound like they are being executed the way they are designed. You're huddling in the produce dept because it is supposed to be known that it's the focus dept for the month. The next month it could be the same dept if they are chosen as the focus dept again. Generally the focus dept is the one that is struggling the most but that is certainly not always the case. :) You should also be covering what the topic of the month is IE safety, etc and addressing any q vision or OSAT issues as well.
You have to do work at your huddles? At ours they just read us figures about the store and tell us what we have to work on. I like going to them because usually they have food for us.
