Managements the problem
Permalink

I feel that my co-workers are great.  Honestly, i can't think of anyone that I don't get along with.  It's the management team that makes this such a miserable place to work.  the managers and department leads are so far removed from their employees as to be ineffective.  there isn't one of them that's able to command one ounce of respect from anyone.  From a store manager that's little more than a spy, seeking only to fire, write up or threaten, to co-managers who are aren't allowed to lead properly.  My department lead is probably the worst supervisor I have ever had the misfortune of working for.  He sits at his desk all day doing God only know what.  I've never seen him assisting a customer in any capacity and I doubt weather or not he even know how to perform the tasks he is supposed  to be supervising.   You can't get the time off you need as it will get denied.  You get on his personal "crap" list if he doesn't agree with your requests or he thinks you ask to much.   Scheduling is a joke.  You either get hours spread across six of seven days of the week for months at a time, (never 40 hours), or you don't get anything at all.  Many is the time I've personally had to work ten plus days without a day off.  I know one individual who says she was required to work 14 days without a day off.   Store management won't do anything about it.  The Union won't address it and the state labor department can't help.  You get no acknowledgement at all.  I've gone three months now and not spoken a single word to or from my supervisor.    It's gotten to the point now that if you hear your name spoken by management, it's never, ever a good thing. I can't get out of this company fast enough.

At our store you have to be absent 3 days before you need a doctors note.  If you don't need the money, call in sick a couple of days if you need a day off.  Food poisoning or stomach flu should do for an excuse.

You're spot on.  They dog Heads/Asst's who are doing a good job and let the ones who suck to their own devices.  And how come every female co-manager I've ever seen is a miss this and miss that.  Can't you find anyone who would want to marry you?  No NO NO because you're a miserable human being who sits at a computer until you want to complain about someone then back on a computer again.

At our store, you need a doctor's note for every call off.  Plus, they are as apt to write you up as they are to accept the note.  I had one co-worker who was told by a Manager that a dr note wasn't sufficient and wrote her up anyway.

The union would love hearing about those things.   They'd have a field day with your store.

A girl at my store brought in a Dr's note and my manager refused to take it because he said "it's fake". My jaw dropped and I told her that a grievance must be filed, which she did. Still waiting to hear back on that one.

Yes.  The workers are the front-line soldiers and reconnaissance.  We need to observe, document, and report (to the unions, up-line in the company, and, as needed, to government agencies) in order to make an amoral, unaccountable corporation comply with contracts, laws, and, if possible, common decency.

Then nana died.  She was like your mother, raised you since  you were five.  Take the 3 days funeral pay lol!  Your car won't start.  You locked your keys in the car, waiting on locksmith.  Someone broke into your house/apartment.  The list goes on and on.  Be creative.  Toilet overflowed.  Kitchen fire.  If they don't like the first excuse just run through them all in one phone call lol!

Just look at who hires them and you have your answer.

We aren't talking about a normal store - we're talking about Kroger!  So whoever does the hiring is responsible for the day to day store operations?  Scheduling?  I never saw the person who hired me work at my store.  Ever.  She worked in a different city.  I doubt whoever hired OP is responsible for scheduling days in a row without a day off.

Our HR person just hires the first person to fall through the door.  We need to have more discretion and Kroger need to pay more.

It's getting to the point that I don't care if they write me up or not.  Shoot, they can use my ink pen to fill out the paper work.  I am actively seeking other alternatives.  I wouldn't have believed that there was a company this bad if I hadn't seen it for myself.  Once I find other employment, I doubt I will even ever shop there again.

Kroger does have a way of ruining everything don't they?
