How do I go about filing a grievance? I'm being scheduled to work Saturdays AND Sundays every week when there's people below me who get every single weekend off. I'm so sick of being stuck working weekends when I have more seniority over those who get EVERY weekend off.

I was told, regarding similar issues that the schedule writer was abiding by the terms of the contract and could do as he pleased. Management wouldn't or couldn't help and the union didn't care. so, basically I had no recourse. If you don't mind being written up once in a while, calling off seems to be the best bet. At our store, you have to be written up something like three times before they suspend you for three days.
. . . abiding by the terms of the contract . . . and the union didn't care . . .
If the company isn't violating policies, safety standards, laws, or the contract, what could the union do and on what basis?
That's the point. since no rules are being violated, the union didn't care and couldn't help. Even though I feel that I'm being treated unfairly. (I often times am the only one in my department required to work six day weeks, and then for less than 40 hours).
I guess those employees asked for the weekends off or had their availability approved before you did. Management isn't going to approve everyone being off on the weekends. If you have some seniority, claim an earlier shift on the weekends so you can get off early. (If your contract allows it.)
I wouldn't expect them to approve everyone for the weekends. I've asked for a Saturday and/or Sunday months in advance only to be bumped at the last second by someone who's got seniority. I have attempted to modify my availability only to have it rejected or the request ignored. At our store, unless you have some seniority, you ain't nothing.

Try changing your availability on Saturday and Sunday to 4 hours or so early in the day. Or late. Whichever works for you. See if they will allow that.

Those people who have seniority were once in your shoes. They had to make their way through the ranks just like everyone else.
I knew someone who was just one up from me who had more Sundays off than anyone else above and below. It actually pissed everyone off because even if she was scheduled to work a Sunday, she weaseled her way out of it 90% of the time.
When I brought up my situation about having a second job to management, basically I was told to change my availability or pick where I want to be more. They never, ever, accept unavailable Friday, Saturday, and Sundays, which overlapped with my other job the most. What you can try though is see if those with lower seniority would like to work a day. Chances are one of two things will happen:
1) They don't get a lot of hours and will take the extra bit.
2) They don't get a lot of hours, but won't take it because who wants to spend their weekends at work?

Yeah...I get that too. Just because you may have seniority doesn't mean that those of us at the bottom don't have families and events that we'd like to attend. It's not every weekend that I'm requesting, just once in a great while. But even that is denied us for the most part. I'm not some dumb, wet behind the ears kid, I have some serious mileage on me and have been around the block more than once. I have worked for better companies with more equitable solutions for such things. It seems that in this company, the deck is seriously stacked against us. But it's a moot point, cause the first opportunity I get for other employment, I'm gone.
If you are looking for another job, then quiet down at work and don't mention weekends off again. Wait a few weeks and then just call in sick. Seriously, they can call someone in to replace you, somebody wants the hours.
10 hour minimum between shifts sounds great.. my contract only requires 8.. fortunately my department manager allows me to set an availability despite my full time status, so I normally have at least 9.5 hours off
