Will I be fired?

Well you see, ever since corporate has come management has been really strict. For example, we are no longer allowed to make trains with the carts because it is "not safe." Sunday night I decided to help this one guy out and take his hour long cart shift right before my hour long cart shift. While out there, someone else came to my aid. She has been there about 5 months and so is not on probation like me. She asked me if I wanted to do trains to get it done quicker. I was reluctant at first but after being out there for 1 hour already and thinking about the hour to come, I agreed. While we were pushing carts together a member of management came out and asked us what we were doing. He's usually really laid back and jokes a lot so I wasn't sure if he was actually being serious. We exchanged a few words and he said to me " You know, it's okay to rat out you fellow employees."  I thought he was joking but looking back on it he was probably serious. He left us and we still made the train anyway. I don't want to be fired but now I'm afraid I have it coming. I wanted some second opinions so thanks in advance!

You are no longer allowed to make trains with the carts because it is not safe.  You agreed to go ahead and make trains because it would be quicker.  Next time somebody asks you if you want to make trains just say no.   You may also want to use your strap, wear your vest and don't listen to music with your earplugs/headphones in.  Don't use your cell phone and watch out for cars - they will run you over.

If you are still there on the 8th day after the incident, then you should be ok.  Our contract states that you need the write up within a week of incident.

Follow directions and never talk back to your managers unless it is something illegal.  Make sure you can read the person before joking with them.

As for the train, I saw two CCs doing that the other night.  Goofy kids.  Pushed 30 carts away from the store uphill to gather two strays and then turn 32 carts around to get back to store.

If you do get fired, there are bigger and better jobs available.

Your manager may joke and whatnot, but corporate is as serious as a heart attack. They NEVER joke. EVER. If you haven't been written up or spoken to, consider it lesson learned and never do it again. Remember: corporate is as serious as a heart attack.

 Very true. Everything is about liability now, and everyone is terrified of the lawyers. You can be loved and carried about on management's shoulders, but if H.O. sniffs a law suit around you, you're gone faster than you can say ¨I object, your honor!¨

 32 carts at once WOW!!!!!!! I never do more than 12 at a time.... and we are only supposed to do 8 at a time!!!!!

 Our division has out maximum set for 6. But there's no point in bring im 6 if there gone by the time i walk out the doors. It's pretty easy to bring in 10 if your using the cart leash.

when Kroger first sent out those cart straps like 3 years ago they said we were required to use them, and I'm pretty sure that's still the rule, only now our store doesn't even have one. ha.

One night I saw the lot sweeper guy get out of the truck and grab something off a cart corral.   I think it was a cart strap.

I think our limit is 5 carts.  They weigh about 60 pounds each.  Pushing 300 pounds is doable.  Factor in bent carts and bad wheels and it is probably like pushing 450 pounds.

I might have exaggerated the 32 carts for effect.  :).  It was atleast 20 feet long tho.

Well then they can't do carts, it's not safe.  Carts should stay in the lot until they replace the strap!  Rules are rules Kroger.

 o.o really? 60 pounds? They don't even feel that heavy until you stock **** in em.

32 carts is definitely doable. When we make trains, I would push 32-35 in at a time. Some of the football players I work with will push in like 37-40 carts at a time while I steer it. It's kind of hard to push that many in at a time but it can be done.

 32 for one person is easy. It's just that finding someone who can turn it is the harder part. A couple days ago 3 of us pushed a 63 cart train. (two of us pushing and one turning). Store Manager walks out, stares at us and than turns around. He as soon as he saw us at the corral he told us to keep it up but if corporate came around our ass was grass.

Is this policy in every division? Because i see all our cc's make cart trains all the time, that are at least 10-12 carts.

STAR Safety guidelines (and I'm pretty sure STAR is consistent across divisions) read that no more than six carts are to be brought in at a time and that cart straps are to be used when retrieving more than one shopping cart. Of course, that guideline is hardly ever followed, because management looks the other way so that the store doesn't get low on carts even during the slower periods, but, at least at my store, management put a stop to trains due to safety concerns and that is enforced. Not only is it a safety risk for those that are a part of the train, but it's also a safety risk regarding customers/vehicles.

Safety.  Another good class action lawsuit for Kroger.  I wish someone would get the ball rolling.

I wanted to do a quick update on what happened. So the manager who confronted me said nothing to me again, but the STORE manager came up to me and told me not to do it again. She didn't say it in a stern way, but like how you would talk to a 5-7 year old. So I guess I was worried about nothing... So sorry. But thanks for all the replies and I will keep all of them in mind the next time I decide to do something stupid! Thanks again.aww

 No, well not immediately. I'm pretty sure the worse they can do is tell you to remove them from your ears. But if the infraction is repeated I'm pretty sure the punishment will increase.

If you are still in your probationary period, then yes, you can be fired, because it's company policy that no earphones be worn when out working in the parking lot. You're not supposed to wear them in the other departments either, but depending on your management team, some don't bother as long as you're working. 

If you're not in your probationary period any longer, then they can just keep writing you up if you ignore their instructions to not wear earphones, and it's typically three write-ups for the same offense in a given time that leads to termination.

Earphones in the parking lot isn't smart, any way, so you shouldn't be doing it. You need to be focusing and concentrating on your surroundings and your job. Music distracts the senses. You've got cars pulling in/pulling out of parking spaces, going up and down looking for parking spots or heading out of the parking lot, cars entering the parking lot, people walking around, etc... you need to be listening at all times and paying attention to what's going on in the immediate area around you. It's not only hazardous for you, but to others as well, when you wear earphones in the parking lot.

There have been courtesy clerks injured/killed that work/worked for Kroger and the Kroger family of stores. Don't risk being one of them.

The answer is: yes you could make an train as long as the corporate does not catch. But I had seen 4 courtesy clerks creating trains safetly. 

The job was done and there was no customer complaints. They were threaten for write ups, but those 4 showed how less carts it will be and complaints.

 Its code man. She wanted to have a train pulled on her and he wanted to join. Just share her pussy and all is good.

Safety is important. There is an idiot advising you to break a rule for every idiot making up a rule.  Your store sounds nice. Really. A little chaos but not too much? No crowd gathering screaming contradictory orders and blaming you? Probably follow the safety rules and always think and pay attention.

I don't think they will fire you.

OP here. Well 3 weeks went by and I thought everything was fine. But no Store manager asked to talk to me for a minite and then explained what was going on. Was just told a lot of bs I explained myself but they dont care They hired some trans dude to replace me and terminated me. **** this **** hole!
