I went to a different Kroger than I normally shop at yesterday. So it's back to school time again. I heard the store manager on the speaker telling employees that if they sold 7 of those school packages in 30 minutes he would buy the winner a coke and a candy bar. The second time the manager made an announcement he said "I can hear this change jangling in my pocket, who's gonna take it from me?" I honestly don't remember the third announcement he made, I couldn't really understand his rambling. Seriously, 7 in 30 minutes? It was 10:30 am so not really peak shopping time.
I hate those donations. Our Kroger always pushes those school packages over a dollar or two donation. I guess there's more in it for Kroger if they can make a few pennies off the sale of a package.
Doctors without Borders and the like for me. And never give your money to the Red Cross or Susan G Komen if you want to see it do good, because it will do nothing there.

Susan G Komen lol! I remember 2nd year I was cashiering at Kroger, I was on the 4 to 12 shift. I didn't realize what I had been saying until my shift was almost over....."Would you like to donate a dollar or two to Susan B. Anthony?" LOL! Nobody caught it! Customers just smiled and said no thank you. I don't know where that came from, I KNEW it was Susan G. Komen.
Kroger management tends to put a lot of pressure on employees to donate when the company runs a donation drive, be it school supply kits, hunger bags, United Way and so on. Employees, at least at my store but I assume this is true elsewhere as well, are getting aggravated with management's inquiring if they are going to donate (not just once, but multiple times, 'cause management wants to "beat" out everyone else in the district - there's probably another stupid, unnecessary bonus if they do, waiting for them). Kroger doesn't pay its employees well and doesn't provide stable hours, so employees are already struggling with bills, school expenses and so on, but management doesn't "grasp" that. Maybe if Kroger paid its employees better rather than the worst wages in the industry and job market in general and scheduled employees hours that weren't all over the place, employees would be more interested in donating.
Are there people of all ages out there that are in unfortunate situations that need help? Yes... but Kroger needs to stop trying to make its employees feel guilty and like bad people when the employees that are struggling can't afford to give or only give a couple of dollars. I wonder how many school supply kits the CEO of Kroger is purchasing for donation or how many school supply kits others high up and well off in the company are giving?
I know at our store it's ALL about beating the other district. They couldn't care less about the charity. If they did, they wouldn't have put that crappy food in the food bags. Kroger brand mac n cheese and cream of mushroom soup. Yummy! Oh, chicken broth too! I wanted to tell each customer that bought one if they would like to see inside the bag first, then decide whether to purchase one. I swear I think someone over ordered and they were just trying to pawn it off in the name of charity.

Right? I remember a few years back when our donations (competitive earnings) fell behind a measly $5.00 when we were competing against another store. Our old manager had an Excorsist Style fit. When he left, one of my co-workers said "this is NOT supposed to be a competition. Who cares if we win? Whatever donations we get should be sufficent."
Well, a week later he "quit." Our manager told the rest of us that there is NO PLACE for those who do not want to help get donations to work there. And if nobody likes it or thinks xxx amount of dollars is good enough, then quit.
