Should the minimum hours be increased?

I'm a part-time cashier, and some weeks I'll be scheduled for 25-30 hours, but other weeks start off with 17 or 20. One week, I had 20 but covered someone's shift and accepted call-in requests/stay-late offers and wound up with 30 instead. At my store every worker must be given 12 hours unless the worker is unavailable/whatever.

But new schedule makes me anxious because like Forrest Gump says I never know what I'm gonna get. I'm a good worker, and I think that is why the front end managers like me and seem to give me first dibs on bonus hours, but even with the full timer cashiers raking in 40 though they arguably do less work (6am-2pm shifts, give me a break!), I wish I could get more consistent hours or that there was a higher minimum for fringe full timers like myself.

It seems more cashiers are coming in, so everybody gets 17 hours sometimes which is annoying. Spreading the wealth instead of thinning the heard and making happier workers. It all falls on me to say "sure I can work today" or "sure I can stay later" when I've been scheduled off and other people keep no-showing and calling off. I never call off and I'm never late. I was lucky this week because the front end manager gave me an additional 8 hour shift for tomorrow so I'll have 28 now instead of 20.

I dunno why the high school kids even bother for 12 hour shifts. Now I know why half of them goof around and slack off. But even as a bagger I was getting 27 hours most weeks.

when the next contract negotiations come up rally your store and demand more min hours. You may have to compromise but if you push hard enough you can force it.

We're union. Anything is possible.

Those cashiers that work that 6a to 2p shift have probably been with Kroger for years.  As far as evening out the hours so everyone has some, well, ask those cashiers that have been there year after year if they think it's fair.  They were probably new hires and part time when they started and went through the same thing you are going through.  If you need more hours find another job.  As far as those young employees who are in school, well they have just as much right to those hours as you do.

If you want things to be fair, why don't you make sure they are calling the employees with more seniority than you first to fill in a shift.

I wish that I only received 12-17 hours a week. The minimum at my store is 20 hours and I would be relieved to even receive that. The least amount of hours I usually get is 32 hours and even that is RARE. Most of the time, I end up working 36-40 hours a week and last week I worked 50 hours. All of this for a "Part-Time" employee.

I personally hate it at my store so the fewer hours the better for me. I need to get out of Customer Service.

Did you read my post? 6-2 is easy work, how is that fair to people in my position working till midnight? Never dissed the kids, just saying 12 hours makes for a real crappy check after taxes and union fee. Find another job? When all evidence says Kroger is hard to coordinate with. You're way off base with this "fairness to all" crap when Kroger keeps asking me to come in. There's a reason why they wind up asking me. Thinning the herd makes for happier part-timers. Kroger has plenty of money. every day I see managers on register.

Wanna switch stores? I guess maybe the choice to refuse the min. hours is lost when you join the CS desk?

Wait what?  Really?  When I was new, there were some weeks where I had 0 hours for that week...not even a single 4 hour shift.  Was that a breech of contract?  It was months and months ago.  Not sure how I'd look that up because I don't exactly own a handbook of my region's contract.

I think it has to be for a few consecutive weeks before it's a breech.  I knew of a couple of people who had 0 hours in my department.  One quit (rightfully so) and one moved to front end.

The reason why they won't up the hours is because of insurance.  Kind of ironic, since heaven forbid someone gets sick for a week and can't afford to see a doctor.  But yet, you need a doctor's note...hmm...

Claim the 6 -2 shift then.  Change your availability so you are not available nights.  Use your brain!

But changing their availability will more than likely cause them to get no hours (or the bare minimum). And they can't claim 6-2 if it's held by someone with higher seniority (usually, it is).  OP's gonna have to stick it out or find another job, since it won't get better.

I know that but OP seems to think it's not fair.  I tried to explain to her those cashiers have probably been there for years and deserve that early "easy" shift because they put their time in and deserve it.

I loved the early shift when I worked it.  It has it's problems too like every other shift.  The worst is walking into the store first thing in the morning to a huge mess you get to clean up.  Sometimes it's so boring you count the hours until someone else comes in so you can take your break, then BAM!  It gets busy and you have to wait until around noon for your break.  I liked to keep busy to make the time go faster and mornings are slow clock watching hours.
