Tried to get shift covered, manager refused
Permalink

So my girlfriend thinks she may have hurt her back, and needs to go to the er, and I work today, i tried to call in to get the shift covered, and the store assistant manager refused, saying that there is no one that can cover that shift, and i will have to find someone else to take her.  There is no one else, she is in great pain, can't hardly walk, and i live a half hour away from the store so if i take her now, i will not be able to make my shift.  What are my options, should i wait and complain to HR, talk to a union  rep, I am very upset and do not want to do anything to jeapordize my job.  Please help me

FYI:  I also rarely call in, the last time I had to miss a shift was about 8 months ago because my car got stuck in the snow

Op here,  I just talked to the only manager on duty, so wouldn't they know it is a lie?  I just want to get her to a doctor, i'm perfectly fine and don't have great insurance either.  Also, this manager has been known to be pretty cruel and i believe they've even been on probation before.

Just call in, if your division has the same rules as mine then there's nothing they can do if you don't have more that 4 callouts in 90 days.  Hell, last weekend, one of our courtesy clerks suddenly got tickets to a college football game, and tried to get the shift covered the day before the game.  Management told him it was too soon to cover the shift and he just called in.  Everyone knew he went to the game, but couldn't do anything because he didn't have more than 4 call-ins.

Call in sick, give them 2 hours notice. Just tell them your name and time of shift and tell them you won't be making it in today.  Don't feel like you have to over-explain anything.  Just say you're calling in and won't be there.

I would have just called the manager back and said "I won't be able to come in today, I'm on my way to the ER.  I will be in tomorrow, thank you.  Then HANG UP THE PHONE!

FMLA should cover that.

well, I ended up going in for the shift and taking her to the ER after work, and was there til about 2 in the morning, but everything turned out okay, but should I pursue a complaint or a grievance for this, or should I even bother? I am still really upset about how this situation was handled, and I had never heard of the FMLA, but it does sound like in this case it was violated. I don't want to jeopardize my job but at the same time, I really feel wronged here.

I would let it go, what's done is done.  But, I'd gather all the info I could in case this happens again in the future.  Sometimes they like to retaliate if you file a grievance or complain.

last year they tried to pull that on me when my sister (my roommate) got in a car wreck like 2 hours before my shift. sorry, my hysterical sister needs her only family in the area with her??

of course the week before i had to call in with about the same notice because my grandma was dying across the country and we had to go. i just went and used my vacation week for that week.

now i'm at a different store and I got hit by a car on the way to work yesterday. my sister called in for me and they've got me covered for the week, not even asking for a note.

point is - life happens, loved ones need you. gotta do what you gotta do. screw em

I don't see what you have to file a grievance for. Kroger is not obligated to find you a replacement. At my store, it was always "come in, we'll give you the schedules and phone numbers, call people until you find someone who can cover it". If you don't have time/can't, call off and take the minimal penalty for calling off.

I think you just have the wrong expectations for what Kroger should do for you.

Well yes, Kroger is responsible for covering a shift if someone calls in.  They will try everything to get you to work so they don't have to take the time to call a few people.  Employees are begging for hours, a shift isn't that hard to get covered.  Things happen, people get sick, get in accidents etc.  Unless it's stated in writing you can't EVER miss a scheduled day of work, then yes, you can call in.  There's no penalty for calling in unless it becomes excessive.
