I don't know if anyone else has it in their stores, but it's basically where we package up deli meat we slice in the morning in bags and put it out in a case for customers to get so that they don't have to stand in line if they don't want to. It has to be done within 2 hours.  On weekdays it's fine, we usually get it done in 30/45 minutes since we don't have to cut much for it, but on weekends we have to cut something around 80 half pound packages of various meats and cheeses.

It's not bad if you have help, but some days you're alone and of course you have to keep stopping to help customers if it's busy. (It's always busy on weekends because apparently people wake up dreaming of deli meat and rush to Kroger.) Then when you take over 2 hours to do it, the head of department asks "why is it taking you so long??" and when you tell them why they say something like "that's not an excuse, I cut it by myself on Thursday and got done within an hour!" On Thursday they'd probably have something like 35 packages of meat/cheese and it's not busy.Well ok, what do you want me to do? Ignore the customers? I wouldn't mind doing that, but they might not be so keen on it.

Keyword: THURSDAY. NOT SAT OR SUN. Of course it's going to be busier on the weekEND. Not so much on a weekDAY like Thursday. Did you explain that you are busier on a weekend than on a weekday?
Although what they probably be like this

Deli head: why ain't this done? I got it done on a Thursday in an hour by myself
Deli employee: it's busier on a weekend than on a weekday like Thursday

What deli head actually "hears"

Deli employee: fxjjddndnsbddnsbx on a weekend henrndnff on a wwwkday

^ pretty much. no

We used to have a nasty old lady for an assistant  back-up who would always threaten to write us up for being slow, but she just stood around and never did anything to help. She was the queen of saying "well I did it alone the other day and I was much faster!" Then one day on a weekend I let her do it alone and she was falling more and more behind, and she had to go do something else. I didn't do anything to help her since she should be able to do it alone in under an hour right? She came back and got mad and said "a team player would have jumped in to help out!" I told her that I didn't want to slow her down since she was supposedly so much faster than me. She was pissed, but it was no secret I hated her so I didn't really care.

Thankfully she went back to the hell...I mean Kroger...she had transferred over from.

I would pop off and say "it takes longer when you do the job safely and correctly".

That sounds like a pretty neat service as long as your meat doesn't just go to waste. Anyway, you're pretty much stuck between a rock and a hard place. Take care of the customers first and foremost. Your Department Head will have to either help you out or just keep crying about it.

most likely the latter.

I hated it too.

I had to do the afternoon cut, and a good chunk of the time it would either not get done at all, or done halfway, especially on the weekends. We got yelled at, but I told em that when there are only two closers, and no overtime given to said closers, things get put on the backburner.

You'd think that that'd put their ass in gear to hire a couple of others, but nope.

That sucks. I usually never bother with the afternoon one unless a manager whines about it.
