Hours so low!

Hours are so low on the front end at my store that one employee didn't get any hours this week, but was placed on call.  This employee has been calling everyday to see if they are needed and they get told no everyday, that we don't have the hours.  I could see this if sales were low, but were busier than ever.  And the crazy thing is this after 6 other people quit on the front end.

In my dept., the deli, we just hired a new guy to do chicken and now were told that we may not have hours for him next week even though were shorthanded as hell!  And to show how bad Kroger is, a young girl who was living in her car, quit Kroger because it wasn't paying enough. She had been there several months and knew a few departments but still had to quit because it wasn't enough to make ends meet.

My store is in a different situation but it still sucks.

US Thanksgiving is coming up and we have hardly anyone to work front end so the front-end we do have, get asked  to stay over by sometime 2-4 hours after an 8 hour shift. I haven't payed attention closely to anyone else's schedule but I seem to be the only one working 6 days a week, one day off on front end. Everyone else is getting two days off. I'm so discontent with my job that I would love to work the minimum 20 hours a week at my store while I find something else.

From this website though, it seems as though other stores sometimes schedule  capable employees for meager hours, yet my store gives out extra time like candy even to employees whom don't want it.

How this corporation treats its "great people".

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone, from fine, responsible corporate citizen, Krogrr!

Just a theory, but simply based on how this company operates, I suspect they're cutting hours because they know they will be using more hours the week of Thanksgiving/Christmas/New Year's. This way, the company "saves up" money to offset the additional hours that it has to pay out for during the holiday weeks.

Fact of the matter is, until Kroger stores as a whole see a significant drop-off in revenue and it's a big enough drop-off for shareholders to notice and react negatively to, expect this and other non-Customer 1st practices to continue. Conditions in stores in general are bad. Corporate knows this, but corporate doesn't care, because the bad conditions haven't gotten bad enough where it's resulting in a significant enough loss in business.

A company that truly put the customer 1st and truly thought its employees are great wouldn't skimp on the hours. Sure, you do need to watch the hours, because yeah, you're in business to make money, but Kroger takes it to the extreme with its greed that runs deep. You can see how much money the Kroger executives and CEO makes and how big their bonuses are. Compare that to, say, Costco. The difference is night and day. If Kroger was a less greedy company and was planning for the future, departments would be staffed adequately to serve the customers and the employees would do so with a sincere smile, not a fake one, and actually be motivated to go the extra mile for the customers. Invest in your employees, and you'll be protecting your existing customer base as well as growing it down the line. You won't have to worry as much about the competition because your customers will be less likely to want to leave a store that's genuinely friendly and has what they need a majority of the time.

Here's something else we all know: customers that get all mad and declare that they're going to shop elsewhere, nine out of ten times, you'll see them back in the store later on in the week or next week. We know this, but more importantly, corporate knows this. It generally doesn't matter whether a customers leaves happy or unhappy. They'll often be back, despite throwing out the word that's supposed to send us cowering in fear and scrambling to appease them: Walmart. Thus, corporate operates the stores the way it does, enabling it to cut hours while pocketing all that extra money. It's a dangerous strategy, because when unhappy customers actually do cease to return, it will be too late to fix the problem, but that's what greed does to you. It makes you shortsighted and before you knew it, you're on the precipitous of a cliff and there's little hope of turning back

Kroger needs to step up their game.

Almost everywhere is hiring now because of the holidays, and a lot of them pay more and give more hours. Hell, at least in MI, you start at 9 bucks at McD's.

But what's the cost of living in MI?  Probably works out the same as making $7.35 in my area.

It's 9$ everywhere.   McDonalds pulled a walmart and hiked their minimum wage.

some managers get end of year bonuses based on hours (not) used at the store so like everyone they wait til the last minute and barring the required holiday madness, they slash part timer hours

of course our division minimum is 18 hours
