You should be able to learn all that at work.  If you don't know any of it yet it's because you don't need to know it.

What is Key Retailing according to Kroger?   Basically a set of standards designed to streamline work and be efficient.

What does CAO stand for?  Computer Assisted Ordering

What does BOH stand for?  Balance on Hand

What is Shelf Ready Packaging, and how is it labeled?  There will be "SRP" on the shelf strips to indicate.   Basically you put the box in the shelf with the product in it as it is designed.

On what products should box cutters not be used?  Anything that can damage product, for example a box of bagged items(popcorn kernels).  You should be using the tape splitter portion of the boxcutter for most everything.

What is a weekly department planner?  Used by department heads.   It has tasks and allocated time per task that are to be filled out daily.

What does Conditioning mean?   Making it look pretty basically, fronting product up and making it look like customers weren't there that day.  Each department has their own standards for conditioning.

Please list what conditioning looks like for he following:  Each department is different.

a: the top shelf  If frozen/dairy, fronted up to look full at least 2 deep.  Dry grocery, product blocked down or faced 2 deep

b: the bottom shelf  If frozen/dairy faced up to look full.   Dry grocery, product blocked down or faced 2 deep.

c: the middle shelf  Product blocked down or faced 2 deep

What is an endcap, a wing, and a display?

Endcap: End of aisle display

Wing: small display to the side of an endcap, usually shippers/3 tier baskets/ or on steps

Display: Any product on the sales floor not on an aisle shelf.

How do you make a bale?

There are 2 types of balers that I know of, I only have experience with the older one.

  • Press button down to compress cardboard to lowest state, press stop button
  • open bale door
  • insert bale wire every other gap at the bottom, should be 4 pieces of wire
  • poke holes if necessary through stubborn cardboard with corresponding gaps at top of bale
  • go around to back of baler and hang chains
  • from back of bale, slide bale wire through corresponding holes till it reaches front of bale
  • tie the bale wire
  • place pallet next to baler for bale to fall onto
  • change direction of  bale setting to up and hold button
  • wheel bale into salvage trailer
  • unhook chains in back and close bail door

What is a "green zone" lifting?

Basically how to lift to not injure your back.   You want to be using your legs to lift, not your back, so not hunched over.   There is an angle that you are to adhere to to prevent injury.

What is the goal for the receipt tracker?

Improve shopping experience for customers.

How can i improve the receipt tracker score?

Do your part in insuring a positive customer experience.   Keep items in stock, acknowledge, assist, and appreciate customers.  Keep the store clean, and lines short amongst other things.

Thank you very much in advance.

Were you recently promoted to a dept head? I've had to train a few people who were promoted to a dept head and didn't know some of the most basic things such as cao, how to print an esi invoice off of the web, what conditioning was, how to make a sign, how to ORDER, etc. Lol. The people that are promoted sometimes is dumbfounding. :D

I worked in a store with 2 balers.  One older and one newer.  The above description sounds like the newer baler.  I helped out in another store that had a short baler(1' + shorter) but functioned just like the older one I am used to.

On the old baler, you could hold the down button and it would stop at the bottom.  You could also sort of manually change directions of the ram if needed.

On the new baler, you have to open the safety gate or press the stop button to get it to stop at the bottom of the stroke.  There is a light on the control panel that when lit means the bale needs to be changed.  If someone tries to use it anyway, they have to manually hold the button down to get it to work.  It won't work automatically until the bale gets changed.

Those are tough questions for a new hire.  That is stuff you learn as you go.  I don't remember seeing any training videos for them except a quick CAO tutorial.

The baler at my store is repaired with coat-hanger wire.

The process for making a bale is very manual and very potentially hazardous.

The people that are promoted sometimes is dumbfounding.

Promoted to management?

Agreed.  Why is there virtually no official training?

What is there so little regard for the safety of associates?

Is it really sound business to ignore training and then just pay off the injury claims as they occur?

One word of advice on an injury:  never make a statement, never sign anything.  They will make it your fault.
