I recently signed for the deli back up at my store but yesterday after the bids have bent sent in that I may have to go to another store that is over a hour away for training if I get the job. Why wouldn't I train in my own store? Our last back up didn't have to go elsewhere for training. If I have to go another town for training I won't be able to accept the job since I don't have a vehicle at the time but I live close enough to walk to my current store.
Usually successor training is done at the "best" run department in your district. That is why they want you to go to another store. They will also pay your mileage. If you do not have reliable transportation, I would be wary of signing up. Once you are a certified back up, if any department head position in your district opens up, you will be offered the position.
Gets the big thing. Being certified means a big fat raise, but if you turn down that position, it all goes away. It took me about six weeks after my certification to get my own shop.
I don't mean to discourage you, by all means, go for the position. It is a path I went down myself. Just be ready for what it means. The chances of you taking over the department in your home store are slim.
I think the idea is, if you stay at your own store, they'll just use you like they always do instead of spending time to teach you things. But when I was in training, there were several other people who got to stay in their home stores, for various reasons. So they may be able to make an exception.
