Finding Out What Real Leadership is Like
Permalink

So I've worked at a Kroger for a year, and despite trying to make the best of it, it sucked. The last straw was being in a deli department that was being managed by a person that literally didn't know the first thing about managing a team, they were prissy, everything was a crisis, they didn't have the strength to withstand customer complaints or deal with them, overall they were not someone who should have been in the customer service industry.

Now that I've found a new job, I am actually shocked at how great management has been, at how organized they are, and how organized the team is! I get recognition for my hard work and if I make a mistake the managers take me to the side and aren't total jerks about it, and absolutely do not humiliate me in front of customers.

They are everything Kroger management never was. Professional, humane, and sensible.

Kroger should be ashamed of itself. What the hell are they doing, because they sure don't seem like they're running a business. Kroger management is a joke.

"Guys, I just had this great idea to definitely improve customer service! Let's write-up our cashiers and scream at them because they decided to type in the 4-digit PLU on the produce instead of scanning the barcode!"

"Yeah! You know, I have an even better idea. Let's create a system that pulls employees from other departments to go run a register for more than half their shift. Customers will be so happy to be checked out of the store faster! They definitely won't mind a few empty shelves."

"Sure, but how about an idea where if employees don't say hello to every single customer, we will harass them and threaten to fire them?

Typical Kroger Co in a nutshell. Kroger itself is a joke. End of rant.

Here's a good one:  let's make 18 -22 year olds with no experience backups, and department heads, so they are in charge of people with years of experience.  Let them yell and scream at the older people end treat them like they're stupid.   Real professional, Kroger.

I had a run in with one of those young'uns lol!  She started griping really loud about something so I took her aside and told her not to ever speak to me that way again.  I told her from now on you need to speak away from customers and other employees and treat me with respect.  I was QUITE FIRM with her.  I never had any more trouble and we ended up getting along and were great friends.

I just got done talking to someone about this, not the age, but the no experience part.... Kroger is getting very desperate for department heads and backups because they don't have enough people sticking around long enough to learn anything.

I might be getting a promotion myself soon and i haven't been to training either. Here in Cincy/Dayton division we're supposed to go to training before becoming a department head but our coordinator is so desperate for people that i'll probably be sent to another store soon without the training.

At least i've been running relief for a bit though so i have some experience. and i have worked in my department for 4 years.

I've worked in the bakery dept. for over 20 years and while I enjoy the work, you couldn't pay me enough to become a department head.  I've seen it all.

I've found the same thing in the two companies I've worked at since leaving Kroger. At one, the owner or VP visited every store (all 200-some locations) 4 times a year. Every year. And these are locations scattered in about 36-40 states. And these were never a surprise. The date was always scheduled a quarter in advance. And while they were in store, they made sure and talk to every employee and specifically sought out new employees. Visits were always pretty positive.

And now where I'm at, I'm seeing the same thing. We just instituted a major change in how we do things in my group this week that was sprung on us last minute and that a lot of people didn't agree with. At a meeting this week, our bosses boss was there to take feedback to go to upper management, and we were very real with her. And there was no hard feelings, no veiled threats for us not accepting the change. She really wanted to know what we felt, and told us that she feels essentially the same way we do. You could tell in her tone and body language she was genuine about it.

Kroger taught me a lot about management. Mostly about how not to act.
