I've been working at krogers as a Courtesy Clerk since June 2014. I've been asking mangers since OCTOBER 2014 and still been asking UNTIL THIS DAY can I switch departments and I STILL haven't been moved smh Its been nothing but constant procrastination from them and I'm tired of it. I feel as it's a personal dislike they have for me because I witnessed THREE coworkers who were Courtesy clerks like me and they got to move before I did. Also just to let you all know, I have more seniority than all three of those baggers I just mentioned, BUT I heard that seniority doesn't mean ****. This is really annoying because I come in and do my job every single day! I've been here for like a YEAR AND A HALF and only missed TWO got damn days and still wont move me. I thought the company looks at how reliable a worker is as a PLUS?? Seems like they don't.
other than all of that........People.........HOW LONG DOES IT USUALLY TAKE TO SWITCH DEPARTMENTS?? and am I being treated unfairly?? Because I most definitely think I am.
You can't just move to another department unless that department has the hours to give to someone. Find out which department(s) you might be interested in and ask the people who run those departments if there are any openings, or at least tell them you're interested in case they do get any openings. If they really want you, they'll get the ball rolling. Usually when someone moves to another department, it's because that department needs another worker and not because that person just felt like moving to that department.
in my store promotions are based on seniority for all but dept head.
in my store courtesy clerks are lower than the clerks in other departments therefore you should have gotten promoted before the other courtesy clerks if you had more seniority than them.
1. read your contract see if this applies to you
2. talk to management and let them know you want to be promoted
3. talk to in store union person let them know you talked to management about getting promoted.
4. talk to union person outside of store. their number is usually on union board by breakroom
leave time between steps to give them a chance to work may take some time
keep in mind that if you force yourself somewhere they don't want you you you may be scrutinized more than other employees
so if you get promoted don't screw around don't screw up work hard and prove to them you deserved the promotion

I tried that already, the department managers that I went to all tell me the same thing "its up to the store manger"
I've seen this happen time and time again at my store. With one manager he promoted all courtesy clerks of a certain skin color over everyone else. Another time a courtesy clerk was denied a promotion time and time again because ........she was too good at her job as a courtesy clerk and they didn't want to loose her in that position! Management changed and she is now a floor supervisor so she finally got what was due her but it did take 2 years, while the others who were promoted before her are still at the clerk level pay.
A lot of times it does come down to management and you should talk to your union if you want to move up.
one of the reasons I left Krogrr. I was the only courtesy clerk that volunteered to do Utility clerk maintenance because I was the only one who didn't mind mopping floors and cleaning restrooms. 8 months pass and a position in Meat department opens up but I was disqualified because no one else wanted to do dirty work and the worst part was that they didn't even wanna change my position because that would automatically get me a 15 cent raise
Yeah, it's true. Someone finding themselves stuck in a dead end job and repeatedly getting smoke blown up their ass and fed one line of bull $hit after another? The manager/s in play there ain't NEVER gonna let that person go.
Then it becomes a question of how long do you wanna wait til new managers come in---------or hey, better yet, maybe just get out of slave wage retail altogether!
