He has worked at Kroger for at least 20 years and has never had a raise.

Basically, Courtesy Clerks get only one pay raise per most contracts and a raise when minimum wage is increased.

That is just how it is.  The only way to move up money wise is to transfer to another department.

Courtsey clerks getting tips and if they do their job well, they make a lot.  We have several at our store that won't take a promotion because they end up making less!

You know who makes good tips?  Those kids that work at Sonic!  Outdoor work but I think they pay minimum wage and they get tips.

As I recall, as a courtesy clerk I made minimum wage, $7.25 an hour.
I had an option in two years to pick up a fifteen-cent raise.
After that, that's it. That's the cap. Nothing.
The benefits? Nah. The motivation? Screw you.

Courtesy clerks are literally the lowest on the ladder in the entire store yet they do some of the most difficult work under all conditions and are more or less the eyes and ears of the store. If crap happens, the courtesy clerks know it almost immediately. Yet they always get the shaft when union negotiations happen.

lolok.  You'll carry out for so many people on foodstamps or just lazypeople that tips are almost nonexistant. If you do get tipped? It's a dollar, if you're really lucky five dollars.  You sure must be making ****ing big bank when getting tipped once every week while offering carry out to every order.

I thought you ran the cash registers.  Or, am I mistaken?

If so, you need to ask the payroll person what you are classified as.  Then, ask your union rep if you are supposed to be classified as a cashier since you run registers.

If you don't run cash registers, then start hinting to your store manager that you would be interested being a clerk in one of the Departments.  I prefer Dry Grocery.  Dairy, Frozen, Drug/GM or Produce aren't that bad. That is the best way to move up the payscale.  If you are going to school, then being a CC is a safe place for you.
